At last, I posted another of these, and while I hesitated about how to write it, I'm pleased with how it came out.

A red rose and a white rose tied together with a golden silk ribbon, for Henry and Monica Swinton;
A tiny pink rosebud and a thick thorny stem without any blossoms at all for Kenpachi Zaraki and Yachiru
A rose so dark a red that it is almost maroon, with heavy thorns hidden under its lush green leaves, and a brighter red rose with few thorns, tied together with a delicate silver chain, for the Merovingian and Neo
A twig of pink and a twig of white wild roses, with thick, brambly stems, bound together with a red velvet cord, for Phedre no Delaunay and Melisande Shahrizai.
A small blue rose and a white and yellow daisy tied together with a big blue ribbon for David and Teddy
A small black rosebud for Rukia Kuchiki
A tiny white rosebud and a brilliant red rose with sharp thorns for Ukyou Sakuraiji and Kazutaka Muraki
A pink single rose and a white one for Rosie Cotton and Samwise Gamgee.

A silver rose and a faded red rose, for Gigolo Joe and Dr. Allen Hobby

Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] ladyneferankh and based on the prompt "hugs; the best moments are with you": This started off as a sketch, but it turned into a follow-up to "David's First Christmas", but I wouldn't really call it a sequel, since the stories aren't technically interconnected, though they do take place in the same alternate continuity in which David has returned to his family and is continuing to discover the world around him.

matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (YnM - Muraki Oriya and Ukyou)
Cleaned a bathroom, did some laundry, made the bed for the first time in a few days (since I was crawling into it every chance I got), vacuumed the entire upstairs of the house. My cold seems to have diminished to occasional coughing fits and some congestion, but I am doing immensely better today.

I also managed to write/finish:

--One of my [livejournal.com profile] 30_kisses fics, featuring much-younger versions of Muraki, Ukyou and Oriya: I like writing the college-era version of this trio, since there's a more innocent quality to them (well, the two gents anyway: Ukyou manages to stay innocent without being naive the whole time) Younger!Muraki is a dear to write, but he's rather tragic, since I know this shy, gentle, slightly nerdy fellow is going to vanish almost completely as soon as he gives in to his inner demons. I'm also fond of the big brother/little sister connection between Ukyou and Oriya: I suspect they might have been an item briefly during high school, but they let it fade into "just friends" since her parents didn't approve.

--The darn scene with the King of Hades in the Twhinelite X-over, which might seem like a quiet scene, but winds up being very harrowing for Bella (though she could just be acting all dramatic and emo over it)

--Started drafting a Tatsumi/Mercy (OFC) fic for the 12 Fanfic Roses challenge -- and I've got a baker's dozen of pairing prompts now, to my delight. I'm loving the pairings people have suggested, and a number of them are in fandoms I haven't written before, but never thought to do so, thus the experiment was a rousing success!! I still might throw in a few more of my own, we'll see, but I'd better get cracking writing the ones I've got. Granted, they're mostly going to be flash fics or ficlets, but those are fun to write, albeit harder, since my brain goes into "plot with beginning, middle and end" mode all too often and I have to remind myself that a character sketch can be just as good as a plotted out story. Brian Aldiss based his whole writing career on this very kind of writing (Met him briefly at WorldCon years ago, and for those of you who know him as the author of the story on which "A.I." is based on, he's as sweetly gruffy as Teddy, has as bright-eyed an outlook on the world as David, and he's as polite as Joe -- even has a darling British accent, too.)

Also managed to get in several chapters of "A Game of Thrones" -- I am loving GRRM's style and his characters to the point that my head is doing a little mental voice-casting (either John Hurt or Jeremy Irons as Eddard Stark, Cate Blanchett as Catelyn, Anthony Hopkins as the king) and I'm even imagining a symphonic with subtle metal elements soundtrack, ala "300" or "Beowulf".

One of the first ideas that popped into my head as soon as I started thinking about this challenge (and character prompts are still very much open, so please don't hesitate to give me a nudge based on the ideas I've offered) --

Author's Note: Set after Joe's capture and David's descent into the ocean. Okay, it's not specifically a Christmas fic, but it has to do with fatherhood, and I've always pointed out that Joe is, in a sense, the foster-father to David, much like another Joseph so long ago. Hence the title....

AUTHOR'S NOTE: In a lot of ways, this is based on O. Henry's classic "The Gift of the Magi", with a dash of Richard Paul Evans's "The Christmas Box" tossed in for good measure. It's a bit less fluffy than my previous "A.I." effort, but that kind of comes as no surprise given that the story is told from Hal McGeever's largely unsentimental viewpoint of his very sentimental partner Frank "The Heroic Reporter" Sweitz.

...Which shall be to all silicon cuties and hotties:

An artbook featuring Chris Baker's storyboards and designs for "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" has been published

I spotted this when I was doing my Christmas shopping in the Burlington Barnes & Noble today, and I was tempted to buy it then and there, but I think I'll save it for my list to Santa/St. Nicholas/the Christmas Angel. But trust me, as I was leafing through it, I was as agape as one of those giant heads on the Rouge City viaducts.

No doubt this came out just now on account of the 10th anniversary of the release of the movie. If I remember correctly, one version of this book popped up on Amazon back when the movie was still in (some of) the theaters and then disappeared when the critics Dropped the Ball. At least it's found a place in the minds and the hearts of those who really Get It: I've lost count of the number of books on robotics and real-world artificial intelligence which cite it, and then there's us, the Mecha-huggers who really get the human side of the movie.

I'm not going to link it up for reasons that will become clear in a moment. Cut for references to really sick content with possible triggers for some readers )

This actually has me mad enough to write a response of sorts to it. I've been watching "Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex" and I'm now tempted to write a story involving Section 9 breaking a child bot-prostitution ring. That might be a bit out of their jurisdiction, but I have a feeling Dr. Allen Hobby (yes, I'm thinking "crossover") wouldn't be thrilled to find out some people are doing horrible things with his creation, and he might have connections. Who knows what kind of strings Aramaki might be able to pull... Plus, I want an excuse for writing a scene where the Major is almost tenderly carrying a troubled little bot to safety, and a bit with Batou beating the prosthetics out of some perv. No doubt this would be a hard case for Togusa to handle since he's got kids of his own, but it might be the sort of thing that cures him of that tiny bit of speciesism that he seems to have towards AIs.

For starters, the very first chapter features a girl bamfing into the "A.I."-verse from the year 2006 and landing smack in Dr. Hobby's office. And I thought this fandom was bamf-proof.

The summary that proceeds the second chapter alone scares me: When Violet is brought to the year 2159 by Professor Hobby, she makes friends with the handsome mecha Joe, is captured by Johnson-Johnson’s Hounds and is sent on a myriad of adventures, but one thing she wonders, will she ever make it home?

And the author'a protest that they don't write Mary Sues is *really* encouraging. /sarcasm Those that protest that they aren't usually are, but they're in denial. If you're gonna be/write a Sue, please embrace it!
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Snape)
Work has been keeping me busy, and I've been writing more lately. I'm taking up more of the [livejournal.com profile] 31_days challenges that I have horribly neglected, and I've been tinkering with some too-long neglected fics in progress. I recently posted the last chapter of "Along a Knife's Blade", the "A.I."/"Blade Runner" crossover I'd started a long time ago -- and oddly enough, I posted that chapter almost two years to the day since I posted the first chapter.

I'm also getting back to work on the infamous "This Shouldn't Be Happening...": I still wish someone would take up the challenge of drawing a few tastefully and sensitively rendered illustrations for it. To the chagrin of a certain headspace dweller, who's been having terrible knee-jerk reactions ever since I resumed work on it. Every time I spot a pregnant lady at work (and for some reason, there's been a bumper crop of them; wonder if it's people really wanting kids, or they're just copy-catting all the Hollywood actresses who suddenly decided to have kids...), I can sense *someone* in there getting nervous.

And I'm looking at my notes for the equally infamous "A.I."/Harry Potter crossover-fic. It's all I can do to keep from including a pair of characters loosely based on a couple of MxO player characters, including Sieges's future alter-ego, and her good friend/crush/faction commander/object of terror "Baron Samedi" (not his real name, IC or OOC.). They appear to be either some sort of Mecha-enhanced humans or human/Mecha chimaerae, can't figure out which. Looks like these two would be some sort of assassins, but I can't for the life of me figure out how they'd fit in, though it seems to have something to do with the insidious Dr. Lambert Merove's "Project Quinotaur". I'll figure it out.

Just did some housekeeping (website-keeping? website-mastering?) on the AIFFOA; I added a couple of links to a couple of new fics. And just for spit and giggles, I took a look at ff.n's "A.I." page.

YAARGGH!!!!

Someone has infiltrated the fandom with a random humor fic. Mind you, I like humor fics that have a certain amount of *inspired* randomness. But randomness of the "everyone-running-around-yelling-'CHEEEEZZZ!!!1111'" variety puts my teeth on edge. As does *this* person's tendency to include random insane muses into the dramtis personae. And a songfic to an Evanesence song. Mind you, I'm a fan of Evenesence, but considering the way the fanbrats abuse their songs, I've had to relegate them to the same category as Orlando Bloom, ie. the "I like them, but considering the way they get fanbratted, I'm ashamed to admit to being a fan" category.

And I finally sat down and watched "Fight Club" last night.

Whoa. One of those rare times when the movie is just as good as the book! And it helped clear my head of the indignation I'd been feeling over the anNOYing "Tuesday Night Book Club" ad on CBS, with someone misappropriating the infamous "The first rule of fight club..." line. Honestly, if Chuck Palaniuk (sp???) could have a quarter for every time some lamer has misappropriated that line....

Heh, I wonder what Project Mayhem would do to TV executives. Though I don't go for the violent aspects, part of me would love to be in on a stunt of that nature.

Okay, folks, your homework assignment is to dream up ways you'd like to bedevil TV execs who let their writers misappropriate good ideas.

I'm still working on this year's fic (though I managed to write/type the ending of it). I didn't want you to go without something special to read tonight, so I dug up an unfinished "A.I." fanfiction, which I'd posted on the Yahoo! group last year. I have to admit, the idea is a little silly, and I'm a bit embarassed that I wrote it, since there's so many lazy Christmas fanfic writers who take some Christmas classic and just copy-paste the names of the characters from their fandom of choice into it (Case in point these really dumb "Matrix" version of "A Christmas Carol" with [pick one] either Agent Smith or the Merovingian as Ebeneezer Scrooge, that I've seen). But... I'm not so embarrassed to keep from posting it on my LJ.

It seemed wierd not going to Mass on the Holy Day (December 8th, feast of the Immaculate Conception): We went to the vigil Mass Wednesday night, since St. Francis had something else going on the night of the 8th, and thus there was no 7 p.m. Mass. Thus, we ended up missing a little bit of the beginning of part 2 of CBS's movie about Pope John Paul II. I have to admit, John Voight did a spot-on job playing what had to have been a daunting role: he looked the part, and he managed to get the voice down pat, not just the accent, but that wonderful, sing-songy inflection our late Holy Father had when he was speaking in public.

And the whole film managed to avoid falling into either pitfall, of turning into a mere biography or a white-washed hagiography (ie. a saint story: the cause for his canonization is being opened, and there's already been one miracle attributed to his intercession, but he hasn't been canonized yet). They showed him as a holy man, but also a human. I was especially touched by one bit which showed him having a moment of impatience and frustration as he steadily lost more and more of his stamina to Parkinson's Disease.

Oh, and I had to keep punching myself for laughing at/MST'ing one of the casting choices: Christopher "Saruman" Lee as Cardinal Woczinski, the then-Archbishop Wojtyla's mentor. As my mother put it: "His voice is familiar, what else has he been in?" Said I: "He played the evil wizard in the 'Lord of the Rings' movies." Hm, maybe that explains why we've got some lousy bishops: Saruman infiltrated them the way he did to Theoden.

Which brings me to some semi-good news: Holy Trinity will be staying open until Christmas. It gets closed the very next day. Froeliche Weihnachts to you, too, Bishop Scrooge... I'd love to be the one to deliver the truckload of Pennsylvania lignite to your door and dump it right on you.

::Recovering from her moment of sarcasm:: Well, I'm not finished my advent novena yet, so who knows? We might get the big Christmas miracle we're all praying for.

Did a little shopping tonight, while my folks were food shopping: I had to get Alavert and Airborne, which I've been taking every time I go to work. Thankfully, affording it was a snap: I got my regular paycheck today... and the Christmas bonus check which all the store employees get about this week in December... And a big surprise: a "Customer Service bonus". I don't know if this is going to be some kind of new bonus at the end of the year, or it's just a one-time thing, but it sure helped me out where I needed it.

Of course it was busy today, since there's another snow-storm on the horizon: We're supposed to get hit with 6 to 10 inches, and it's supposed to be a definate direct hit, unlike the wide miss we had Monday. The Cape got snow, we just got a few flakes for about ten minutes.

Cut for pro-snow rantage )

Updated the AIFFOA again, archiving one new fic and removing some broken links. It's such a relief to be able to twiddle with this site from the comfort of home.

And last and least, Sieges is up to level 11 and behind on her LJ. ::Pokes her to update it::

Sieges: ::Peeks out from under a blanket, throws a sleepy glare at MR and pulls the blanket over her head again::

The poor thing is tired from a long night running missions that kept getting croggled due to Exile hoodlums shooting at her/mission areas spawning hackers who hacked up her RSI/getting sneered at by Silver, the new mission contact she found, who makes Flood at his most condescending look like a nice guy. Now that she's levelling up, her missions keep taking her to more and more dangerous areas of the Mega-City. Much as she likes shooting at things, she's tired of getting killed/almost killed.
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (MxO_Sieges)
I headed downtown today to take care of some bank business, only to realize, once I got to the bank, that it closes early on Wednesdays. ::Headdesk:: Or since I wasn't near a desk ::Headwall:: I wanted to get started on my online Christmas shopping, but I guess that'll have to wait till tomorrow or Friday, when I get my paycheck. I really need to deposit some cash into the debit/credit account, since I just renewed my MxO subscription (more about that in a moment...).

And I badly needed to go to confession (especially since I missed going last Friday, since I had to work), but I realized I was late for the regular times for confession at St. Joseph's. Luckily, as I was sitting on the floor in front of the tabernacle, praying, a priest came along and asked me if I'd tripped and fallen. I replied, "No, Father, I'm just sitting here because I'm comfortable this way {{What I didn't say, is that I do this in honor of St. Mary Magdalen, who sat at Christ's feet when He visited her and her family...). If I'd tripped, you and the whole neighborhood would hear about it," the last bit said with what I hope looked like a self-deprecating smile. But I took the oppurtunity to ask him if I could make a quick confession, if it wasn't too much trouble, and he gladly heard my confession. Funny how these things work out in the end... Come to think of it, I kinda had tripped and fallen, ie. fallen into sin and I needed a hand up.

I'm still trying to buy a printer, so as yet, I'm printing stuff out at the Lowell Library (which was surprisingly quiet today...). While I was there, I checked up on my MxO subscription, which I thought I was having trouble with. When I renewed it last night, it confirmed that the payment went through, but the next billing date didn't click over on my account info page, which left me a little rattled: Last thing I need right now is to have to call up Sony Online Entertainment and try to cut through the red tape with that.

Also prowled around the message board on "danchia"'s "A.I." site comeawayohumanchild.net: There's someone on there who's been posted fanfics, and I'm planning on joining the messageboard and asking his permission to link/archive them to the AIFFOA.

And watch for a gallery of interesting (and funny lines) from the pop-up mission-related communiques from the MxO...
