matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (There Is No Spoon)
Just back from a dental appointment, followed by doing a little shopping with my folks, which ended up being a fairly lengthy trip: we started out going to the St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop in Lowell... where I picked up something I had been looking for off and on since 2003:

A genuine, limited edition Matrix Reloaded tee shirt, featuring the title on the back and a key, which had been distributed only to cinema employees for the premiere of the film. I've seen this item on eBay off and on, running for as much as a hundred dollars. I got it for ninety-nine cents!

Also went to the K-Mart in Billerica, where I picked up a few Hallowe'en music CDs (never can have enough of those) and the two volume "Vampire Archives" anthology, which was likely a one-volume doorstop in hardback, but which got divvied up into two books as a mass market paperback. I have a thing for anthologies, since they're like mini-libraries, plus you can read at least one or two short stories in a sitting, and that gives one a sense of accomplishment. I'm looking ahead to next month and what spooky book(s) I'm going to read in preparation for Hallowe'en.

This is one of the more embarrassing fics to write and post (which is why it took me a few days to finally get it ready to post), but now that I've finished it, I'm no longer embarrassed by it....

A red rose and a white rose tied together with a golden silk ribbon, for Henry and Monica Swinton;
A tiny pink rosebud and a thick thorny stem without any blossoms at all for Kenpachi Zaraki and Yachiru
A rose so dark a red that it is almost maroon, with heavy thorns hidden under its lush green leaves, and a brighter red rose with few thorns, tied together with a delicate silver chain, for the Merovingian and Neo

by "Matrix Refugee"

Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] crowdog66 and based on the prompt "caresses; every touch you give me steals my breath away"; it's set fairly early on in her exquisite "Degrees of Seperation" universe, during a time when Neo and Smith were separated and Neo sought comfort with the Red King of the Exiles.

Rating: Hard PG-13/soft R (unclothed and intimate touching, relationship dynamics)

Disclaimer: I don't own the "Matrix" series, its characters, concepts or other indicia, which belong to the Wachowski Brothers, Paul Chadwick, Warner Brothers, Village Roadshow Pictures, Joel Silver Productions, Burlyman Entertainment, Monolith, Sony Online Entertainment, etc.

Yes, I know this week has been a messy one between work injuries and snowstorms and unplowed sidewalks and missed appointments with one's therapist, but we've got... three fics for the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti challenge to write. Please get your neurons together in a timely fashion and focus on those instead of on other fandoms! That includes the borderline song-fic inspired by The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" and the till now thankfully forgotten memory of the OOC!Angsty!Agent Smith-fic based on said song which we read back in the day. I could see using this song for a fic about a younger and less corrupt Muraki (even though his eyes are silvery-grey and not exactly blue, though some frames in the anime give them a bluish tinge depending on lighting or the animator), but not an Agent: they don't get angsty since they don't quite have emotions, except for Smith, but then then again, he actually has them and hates them. If you're going to write about blue-eyed characters, you've got a AU "A.I." fic about David to write.

MR's brain: But we wrote half of it, what about jotting a few notes on --

It felt great to revisit the Matrix Online-verse and peek in on Sieges, the Merovingian Paladin and her brother Merrill and their "family dog" Morraeon, and it was even more fun to imagine Christmas in the Mega-City...

On the Sixth Day of Christmas, the Matrix Refugee fanficced for ye:

Redpills stealing a Christmas tree,
Harry Dresden for the holidays,
Frank Sweitz adopting a David unit,
One Chateau Christmas party,
One American Gods fic,
and An A.I. fic with David decorating his first Christmas tree.

It's been a while since I wrote anything set in the DegSep universe, but it's still one that's dear to my heart, so when [livejournal.com profile] crowdog66 requested something from this alternate version of the Matrix 'verse, involving Neo and the Merovingian, I was at one in the same time fumbling for an idea and yet delighted for the chance to write about the One and the Red King of the Exiles. Then I was listening to Transsiberian Orchestra's song "Find Our Way Home", and this one came to mind...

On the Third Day of Christmas, the Matrix Refugee fanficced for ye:

One Chateau Christmas party,
One American Gods fic,
and An A.I. fic with David decorating his first Christmas tree.

"Desires of Christmas Past and Present"

by "Matrix Refugee"

Author's Note: Before I started playing the Matrix Online MMORPG, I was deeply involved in a fan-created Matrix RPG based on the "Degrees of Separation" series of Neo/Smith fics written by the incomparable Laure E. Smith. This series set off an intricate and quirky series of storylines bringing a wide range of epic fantastical elements and complex relationship geometries. This fic is set six months after the end of the Descent into Hell arc, in which the Merovingian was captured by demonic programs and hauled into the Matrix's equivalent of the Recycle Bin, from which he was rescued by a team of operatives, led by Neo and Smith, which included Blaise de Merovee, the Merovingian's almost grown half-human son and heir. Text in brackets [Like this] imply a mind to mind conversation.

Partly an addendum to my last post... Just been watching the televised version of Midnight Mass at the Vatican. At least for the recessional, they stepped up security: four men in suits, one of them the commander of the Swiss Guard, surrounded His Holiness, keeping eagle eyes on the crowd. Now, if they'd just done this to begin with...

This has inspired two things in me: the first and more serious (and more obvious) is to pray for the healing of that disturbed (and disturbing) woman. The second ties into one of the 12 Days of Fanfic ideas I'm tossing around: I'd decided to write a plotless sketch set in the Trinity Blood universe, centering around midnight Mass at the Vatican, with some mild Esther/Abel sweetness (mostly just friends, though I have a feeling the Church in the TB-verse may have relaxed the rule of celibacy in the clergy and the religious since the human population was partly wiped out). Now I'm holding a tracer bullet on a plot-bunny inspired by this evening's real-world incident; my concern though, would this fic be a little too close for comfort for some people, and would it come off like one of those wonkily-written "X disaster happens in the Y universe" fanfics that pop up every time there's some catastrophe, with X being the disaster/tragedy of the moment and Y representing the fanficer's pet fandom. Granted, my first publicly posted fanfic *ever* was a Matrix fic that I wrote during the aftermath of 9/11, when I was still trying to get my head around what was going on (the fic isn't my best effort, but one has to start somewhere...), I still hold some mental reservations about this kind of story: Does it take advantage or capitalize on a tragedy or a catastrophe? Or am I just overthinking things (as usual)?

Sidetrack: I've also confirmed my hunch that the creator of Trinity Blood, the late Sunao Yoshida, attended a Catholic high school; I'd suspected he was either raised Catholic or gone to a Catholic school, given how much he gets right about Catholicism (alongside how much he got sideways, not necessarily wrong. "Wrong" implies ignorance or coloring the facts or just plain ignoring the facts. For the last, see also "Dan Browned" on TVTropes.org). I've come to so much of an appreciation of the TB-verse that while re-watching the anime, I said under my breath, "If you're going to write about fictitious Vatican assassins -- and I swear, if you believed Hollywood and novelists of that bend, then the Vatican has more covert ops agents than the CIA, the KGB and MI6 combined -- this is the way to do it."

Also, there was a passage in His Holiness's sermon which made the Matrix fan side of me perk up its ears (yes, it still exists, even if the Matrix series doesn't quite hold the center of my fannish fixations right now). He spoke of "sleepers awakening from a dream world" and of course that made me think people awakening from the Matrix. I'm waiting for the translated text of the sermon to turn up on the Vatican's official website so I can share the exact words; I tried to find it elsewhere and I hit a couple of pages that made my anti-virus software go into defense mode. :: Growls::

And yes, I am up this late because I am waiting for someone rattling around the living room to Go To Bed so I can take my turn at being the Christmas Angel...

My first [livejournal.com profile] 31_days fic in far too long:

Title: Black Sky Take Warning
Day/Theme: August 27 -- give me your black sky
Series: The Matrix (post-"The Matrix Online")
Character/Pairing: OCs: Sieges (my own character, who's technically canon since her name was mentioned in a critical mission), Morraeon
Rating: PG (just in case)

Author's Notes: This is one of my many farewells to The Matrix Online, which shut down thus summer, another online game casualty to the faltering economy. This is a foretaste of one of the stories I hope to write in full someday.

The day I saw "The Matrix: Revolutions", it poured rain... heavy, splonky rain that was mirrored by the torrential downpour during the climatic Smith vs. Neo fight in the movie. Rain so hard that when I watched the behind the scenes documentary on the DVD, I had a twinge of empathy when Hugo Weaving jokingly talked about just how hard it is to enunciate your lines when a rain machine is dumping a hundred gallons of water on you and your mouth fills up with water every time you open it.

Now, six years later, the successor to the trilogy (though many people argue like Bible scholars on steroids over whether it's canon or not; I consider MxO to be "canon but a different continuity") is coming to an end, and again, it is raining like mad. It's so surreal...

I have no regrets. I am a little sad, but I am happy for the fun I had messing around in this universe. I'll probably start crying my eyes out at 3:03 this morning, after the servers go offline and the realization that I won't have it to rely on sets in, but for now, I am tranquil and content.

Fenshire, one of my good buddies and best friendly enemies, summed it up best when he posted this to the official forums:

"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."

When I saw this on ff.n, I nearly howled in fright and disgust.

Then I actually read it. There is a priceless line from Agent Smith toward the end that deserves to be iconaged:

"Because the only thing in all the universe worse than humans, are Mary Sues and pretty-boy vampires."

I think I've said this elsewhere, but for starters, the Twins got kinda ruined for me because of a lot of their fans. Namely, the squee-gurls who write deplorable "I'm Mary Sue and I'm the Twins' girlfriend and Imma gonna save them from TEH EVOL MERV!!!!11111111" (Though heaven knows, I'd rather read a well-written Sue-fic than some of the stuff out there. Some of my best friends online are Mary Sues or play them.) About the only Twins fan I can stand is Electrify, one of my buddies in the Devil's Advocates, and he's certainly no fangurl. He's a really cool fellow.

I'm dreading the legions of squee-gurlz who are liable to come flocking to the game in droves if word gets out that the Twins are back. I mean, it'd be nice to have a *LOT* more Merv players, but I can't help thinking they'd all be the sort who just want to overthrow the Merv (I'm looking at a certain Mary Sue vampire...) just so they can save their POR TWINZIEEZ!!!11111

Plus I can't help thinking of Dean Winchester's line, "What's dead should stay dead" in last week's episode of "Supernatural".

...while my mother was vacuum-cleaning the rugs downstairs yesterday. She was hoovering the rug in the dining room, and upstairs I was typing part of "This Shouldn't Be Happening..." when suddenly I hear this awful crash and my mother lets out a yelp followed by loud giggling. I run downstairs to see what had happened, and I find her paralyzed with laughter, the handle of the vacuum cleaner in her hand, papers scattered all over the floor and the middle part of the vacuum cleaner, the hard case that contains the bag and the filters, on the other side of the room. Apparantly, the clips that hold the case to the body of the vacuum cleaner had worked themselves loose and as she was vacuuming, the case came flying off. Says my mother, "I expected the bag to break open and the dirt to go everywhere. But it's still going and there's air blowing out of it, and there's papers flying everywhere!" We've had problems with an internal plug working loose in the thing so that it turns itself on and off repeatedly while you're running it, but nothing like this!

Aside from housecleaning and working a four-hour closing shift last night, it was pretty quiet yesterday. Oh, yes, one other thing: I got home early enough to watch the last hour of the movie "All the President's Men" on one of the local PBS stations; I've been wanting to see that for ages, especially since the identity of the real "Deep Throat" was revealed last summer. And I have to admit, the fanfiction-writing part of my brain wants to write a "Matrix" fic that uses the tropes of "All the President's Men" (Heh, I suppose if you think metaphorically, the whole mess involving the Watergate scandal was a manifestation of the Matrix that was the Nixon administration...). It could work: a young reporter could notice something odd about his world, he runs a story about it, then he catches the attention of an Exiled Agent (call him Agent Feld, in honor of W. Mark Feld, the guy who was "Deep Throat") who shares more information with him... then wierd things start to happen.

Yeah, I know some fans would whine at me -- probably the PvP wonks who are always spamming me with /duel requests at hardlines when I'm trying to run RP sessions or missions in the MxO -- for writing a NON-action oriented fanfic. They haven't read "A Path Among Stones" or "A Life Less Empty" in the "Matrix Comics" and they need to, though they'd probably whine OH TAHTZ TEH BORINGZZZ!!1111 WHERZ TEH KEWL FIHGT SCEEENZ??????/////!!111111

Well, it looks like Lent will be off to an odd start tomorrow: I asked to have the day off because I had an appointment in Lowell (as I mentioned before, my appointment in Burlington today, with the nurse practitioner got cancelled), and I was looking forward to having two days off in a row... Because of the snowstorm that's supposed to hit on Thursday -- a storm that isn't even here yet and might just go out to sea or break up or something -- they want me to come in tomorrow as early as I can, and there's an outside chance I may not have to go in Thursday. Well, the earliest that I *COULD* make it will be at three in the afternoon, but that's if everything cooperates and I don't miss the 2.00 pm bus back home. *sigh*. I really don't want to lose the five hour shft on Thursday, and only get a three hour shift tomorrow in exchange.

On the plus side (sort of): Got back from a trip to Burlington just for the heck of it. Neo, you'll probably fwhap me for buying "The Path of Neo": I got it simply because I'm/we're curious about the extended Chateau scenes; His Unholy Highness is the most intrigued with the idea and he wants to see if the Marketing Brothers got anything else right, but the Snark Barrage Master has no interest in it whatsoever (because he isn't in it, of course...).
