You only just figured that out? It occured to me ages ago, admittedly mostly because of a slight case of envy on my part. It's not silly, it's just one of those things that other people may not get but are still important. With regards to the costume, you can always get a plastic cigerette and just have it hanging out the corner of your mouth all day.
