matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Muraki and Tsuzuki)

[livejournal.com profile] vampirebigbang and other delights

So yes, one of the many reasons I've been quieter than usual on here is due to working on the rough draft of my entry in [livejournal.com profile] vampirebigbang which is going to be a kind of extended back story/character memoir of Muraki. It's been insanely fun to write and I've been filling a wire-bound journal with it (said journal featuring a wintry Hokusai print on the cover. His Paleness approves this choice in a journal!)

It's been a bit of a bumpy ride writing it, but things seem to be smoothing out: I'd discovered that someone else had written much the same story, which lead to some momentary wibbling about originality, but then I read said fic and found that while it was interesting, there was A Lot I Did Not Like about it. For one thing, the author made Muraki into a misogynist, which I really don't see: he strikes me as just Not Liking Humans Much Regardless of Gender and having moments when he snarks at 'em all equally. Also, I felt that the author didn't handle the matter of How Saki Ended Up That Way very cleanly in a technical sense, but that just might have been me. It also seemed that the author was trying to make Saki off to be some kind of preternatural entity, which didn't sit right with me: I've always felt that Saki was simply human, nothing more and nothing less, but if someone can write a fic with an energy vamp!Saki and write it well, I'm more than willing to suspend my disbelief. There's been a few like this, including one that hinted at Muraki "catching" the vampirism (ie. the hunger or what I call the phage) from Saki. Also, there was little to no evidence of Muraki's energy vampirism, which to me is somewhat crucial, even if Yoko Matsushita doesn't define it very clearly (causing me to borrow ideas from Jim Butcher to patch up holes). There again, the fic author might have been going by the anime, where the energy vampirism is even less evident (unless one Reads Things Into the bat that keeps randomly popping up in the Nagasaki arc).

And somewhat to my chagrin, there seem to be a lot of odd pairings popping into my fic. Out of the blue, there's a bit of Satomi/Muraki and later on, Muraki/Satomi (yes, when I code slash pairings, the first named is the one doing the seducing. I try not to be anal-retentive about this, unlike Some Fans). This is the kind of pairing that I normally Would Not Write, but it ended up being a case of "It happened, it stays". There is also implied but unconsummated Yukitaka Muraki/Tsuzuki (a pairing I'm on the fence about: I suspect that Muraki's grandfather was an odd duck himself, but I have a feeling he wasn't the type to take advantage of his patients, unlike his son, ie. Kazutaka's father, who isn't even given a name in canon, and so I had to come up with one for him) and for reasons of plot, I ended up writing non-con Saki/Muraki, which usually hits my squick buttons.
