[Yami no Matsuei] "Comfort From the Cold"(PG-13)
Author's Note: The first few paragraphs were written for "Yami no Matsuei, Tsuzuki/Hisoka, but stay with me now for I am weak and starving for mercy.", and the rest was written for "Yami no Matsuei, Tsuzuki/Hisoka, if everyone goes away / I will stay ", both on
comment_fic. Set during the Kyoto arc
Hisoka leaned back against the stones of the arch supporting the viaduct, Tsuzuki's head resting in his lap.
"'Soka... let me stay here a while," Tsuzuki murmured, his voice still thick with alcohol.
Snow drifted past the opening of the arch and Hisoka couldn't help wondering if their mutual enemy had summoned a localized storm to taunt them. "It's getting colder out here; you'll freeze if we stay out here much longer." The flakes reminded Hisoka a little too much of the strange, angel-like feathers that sometimes accompanied the magical workings of the freak that dogged them, and he got a sense that Tsuzuki felt the same thing. He felt his friend and partner shiver from more than the cold.
"I know, I'm juss' too tired t' move juss' yet..."
More like too drunk, Hisoka thought, but he kept that to himself. He could still feel the pain flowing from his friend and partner and the memories he had heard in the older shinigami's mind still hovered in his own. The last thing he wanted to do was add to that pain.
"'Soka, can I assk you someth'n'?"
"Of course."
"How come you put up with me?"
"For the same reason you put up with me those first few days we worked together. Because you're my partner." And because no one else really gets why you're such a spazz and a mess, he thought.
"I've been through a lot of partners. You're the firsst who'ss put up with me for... how long 'zit now?"
"It's going on five years now."
"Practically a record for me. But why d'yah put up with me? I drive you crazy, s-same as I do everyone else. You've see-seen too much of what's in my mind. You've seen how I feel about *him*." He didn't have to say who he meant. The image flicking through his mind, a silvery shadow, was hardly necessary to define it.
"You cared about me first when I wasn't the easiest to work with," Hisoka said, smoothing down Tsuzuki's mussed hair. "I guess I'm just returning the favor and paying you back with interest."
Tsuzuki chuckled, but it sounded a bit like a sob. "Thanks..." He clearly didn't know what to say to that, but he didn't have to say more.
