scytheandroses's LJ, and I thought I'd join in the fun. They're offering a theme a day for the month of August. So, when I had a few minutes last night and this afternoon, I tossed this off. Somewhat DegSep-related...

Day/Theme: August 13: I am already king
Series: "The Matrix"
Character/Pairing: The Merovingian
Rating: PG
Background: Inspired by the background I created for the Merovingian in the "Degrees of Seperation" RPG: http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=mtx_deg_sep . I had speculated that the Merv might have been a regional master program of some sort, during the First Matrix, a paradise which we perceived as a fantasy-like realm, and that he might have tried taking control of the Matrix by knocking out the other regional master programs. This is a sketch from that time...
The funeral pyre on which the body of Alisaunder's women warriors had laid their master's body still burned bright, lighting up the night sky, casting a lurid glow upon the marble facades of the buildings that surrounded the forum. Of course it was all contrivances for the sake of appearance: the Macedonian had been deleted, but his human subjects had to be given the chance to mourn their ruler. The crowd of mourners had thinned, but the Amazons, his brother's female fighters, whom the Macedonian had created as his guard of honor, still lingered, wailing and beating their shields, the stamina that formed part of their program nature allowing them to continue to keep up this din well into the night.
Merovee watched and pondered all this from a balcony window in what had been one of his brother's palaces, and which very shortly would be his. He had the Architect's word that the Southern European and Middle Eastern sector would soon merge with his own realm, the Central, Northern and Western European sector. He had proved in combat that he, Merovee, was the stronger, less flawed program of the two, though in so doing, Alisaunder, his twin, had forfeited his life.
Merovee had not shown his face at the funeral, and yet he had managed to be privy to its ceremonies without being detected. No matter: he would have looked incongruous amid the classical figures, had he manifested in their midst, this leonine-faced warrior-king in a coat of chain mail, a winged helmet on his head. There was unrest among the Amazons, stirred up by some who claimed that he killed his brother on purpose, that he had inspired the combat that had caused his Twin's demise. These would need to be culled and deleted before they corrupted the rest and so caused a rebellion when he took possession of his new kingdom.
His reign would continue and prosper from these new resources, and it would stablise the System. For that matter, why have six programs rule the Matrix, when one capable one could suffice?
