Unexpected day off

I was in the act of punching in, when "Jake", the Frenchman's stand-in from the grocery department came up to me and asked me if I'd like to take the day off. At first I was surprised, then I realized the store was very empty. One of the two Cheryls who work the morning shift was puckishly singing that Moody Blues song "All By Myself".
Well, I accepted his offer: I could certainly use the extra five hours to get some housework done and work on some of these writing projects I'm looking at...
