History made...
Jan. 21st, 2009 12:08 amI don't often talk about politics. That and religion seem to be the most divisive topics, and I don't want to create division here in my little corner of the World Wide Web.
And I'd better add that I am not a fan of our newly-inaugurated President Barack Obama. He's a great speaker, and he's won my respect, but I am waiting and seeing if he carries out his promise to turn things around for this country economically.
But disclaimers aside... history was made today! Our first African-American president was sworn into office. My dad, who was a teenager during the civil rights unrest of the 1960s, said he never expected to see a Black man sworn into office as President. I said I'd expected to see it happen in my life, but it came as a surprise to me and him both that it happened so soon.
I also find it completely cosmically ironic and fortuitous that this inauguration took place on the day after Martin Luther King, jr. Day. I think MLK is rejoicing that one of his kinsmen now holds the highest public office in this country, into which he sought and strove so hard to bring about freedom for his brethren and a peaceful resolution of the strife between White and Black...
So whatever your political differences, whether you're Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, Green, or whatever. Tonight is a night to celebrate a great, historic moment! Tonight, there should be no political divisions: tonight, we are all Americans and we should all celebrate both this new chapter in our country's story, and the diversity that makes this country what it is, and above all, what makes the human race what it is.
