Fanfics and Plumbing
Sep. 11th, 2004 12:29 amShould actually be "Fanfics and Hot Water Heaters". The hot water heater just died in our house. I was in need of a bath this morning, so we had to heat up a stock-pot of water on the stove, not that it was nearly enough, but it took the edge off the cold water. Sort of. This let me off the hook doing laundry, but that only means we'll either have a big pile to do when the heater is replaced, or we'll have to take the stuff to the laundromat. Gad, the hot water heater dying, right when my dad is switching jobs: Not a good thing! It's like something out of a dumb made-for-TV movie where the father loses his job, then one of the kids gets sick with the condition of the week (epilepsy/leukemia/sickle-cell anemia flare-up), and then the mother gets pregnant. Well, my mom's well over fifty, so the last item ain't gonna happen, and it isn't likely to happen with me either. And aside from allergies, we're pretty healthy here. But seriously....
He gave notice at the place where he's working now, and he starts working at the new place on Monday, so that's a major relief that he got that all straightened out.
I finally finished typing the last chapter of "Under the Gun" tonight, and I posted that. I must sound horrible when I say I like finishing stories and posting the last chapter... because then it frees me up to start the next story. In the words of the young writer who was on the panel discussion on breaking into print, at WorldCon last week, If you aren't thinking of the next story you're going to write as you're finishing the story you're currently working on, you are not a writer. I guess I must REALLY be a writer, since I always have at least three or four irons in the fire at once!
This frees me up to finish writing the first half of "A Little Child Shall Lead Him", another "Matrix" fic, this time with an unlikely pairing of characters: the most innocent character in the series, and the least innocent character... I actually have second half of the fic already drafted, but of course I can't post that one yet, until I write the beginning! (Unless I feel like turning this story into Christopher Nolan's "Memento"!)
I better jack out for the night: I've got a busy day ahead of me tomorrow: housework AND a six-hour shift at work. Cleaning the bathroom with cold water is going to be exciting... NOT!
