Merry, our parakeet, once got a stiff talking-to from my mother after he'd bitten me hard enough to draw blood. The whole time, he had his head bowed like he knew he'd been a bad little boy bird. He pretty much acts like a smart eighteen-month-old, anyway, and this just reinforced my conviction that animals are a lot more sentient and self-aware than we've previously thought.
