I found out at the last moment that the folks at [livejournal.com profile] 31_days allow amnesty fics on the last day of the month. So, without further ado, here is the fic that I would have posted yesterday.

Title: "Accidental Resonance/Not What She Seems"
Day/Theme: August 20) sleeping underneath your skin
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion ("The Grigori Continuum Part 1")
Character/Pairing: Gendo Ikari, Kozo Fuyutsuki, OFC
Rating: PG (for very strange, possibly disturbing content)

Author's Note: I started writing this based on yesterday's prompt, till I realized it fit the prompt from the 20th a whole lot better. This one follows yesterday's offering, and as such, you might want to take a look at it first. Takes place after Episode 21 and Kajii's assassination.

Sabia could not bring her eyes to meet Commander Ikari's gaze once during the interview, and when she had finished, she could only focus on the edge of his desk.

"Well, you made yourself genuinely useful for once, since you came here," Ikari said. "There won't be any more security breaches and you're the last person anyone would suspect of disposing of the responsible party."

"'Responsible party'? I shot and killed a man, though I certainly didn't do it for you," Sabia snapped.

"I find your reaction to this incident irrational: you weren't enamored of him, like so many other foolish women, were you?" he asked.

"Not in the least, and may I remind you, not all of us have antifreeze instead of blood flowing in our veins," she snapped.

"Miss Valiant, do not use that tone of voice with me; it shows a lack of professionalism," Ikari replied, though his own tone betrayed a hint of anger.

"This wasn't a matter of professionalism, and I didn't kill the man out of hatred or revenge. I killed him to protect him and the things he held in trust," Sabia replied, slowly standing up and forcing herself to look into his eyes. No easy matter, since the light from the windows caught on the lenses of his eyeglasses, turning them opaque.

"Sit down, this briefing isn't over," he said. And rising, he reached across the desk, putting his right hand on her shoulder to push her back into her chair.

A high-pitched tone resounded and a wierd violet radience shone from the patch under the Commander's hand. A golden radience formed around Ikari's hand, another tone emanating from it. The two tones formed an odd, open chord which filled the office. The floor vibrated under their feet. The radience flowed outward in pulsing waves of light. Sabia became aware of something speaking in her head...

Why do you serve the Lilim and why did you take their form, Penemue?

Fuyutsuki spoke for the first time since she had entered the room. "Good God, resonating AT Fields. Maybe merging Adam into yourself wasn't such a good idea..." The sound of his voice snapped her back to full awareness. She yanked herself free of Ikari's grasp, so hard that she staggered backward, nearly falling to the floor.

Ikari stood over her, cradling his right hand in his left, breathing hard, but still looking at her, his gaze boring into her. "So... the rumors were true, though there's nothing in the scrolls that mentions the Angel Penemue."

"What? Who are you talking about?" Sabia said. "I'm not a Grigori by nature. I'm human."

Ikari ignored her protestations. "Fuyutsuki, have Miss Valiant removed from the GeoFront. She may continue her work off-site."

"As you wish, Commander."
