matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Fuyutsuki - Gendo)

I came up with the climactic funny line at three in the morning (that weird hour when everything is funny), and I also came up with a bit that I had to cut since it broke the flow of the story. But... that's what "omake" is for!

Title: "Scalpel in the Soul"
Day/Theme: September 3) IT GETS UNDER YOUR SKIN, LIFE.
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Character/Pairing: Kozo Fuyutsuki, Gendo Ikari, Shigeru Aoba, Misato Katsuragi, Shinji Ikari, Pen-Pen, OFC
Rating: PG

Author's Note: Set immediately after yesterday's fic, and inspired by a comment from [livejournal.com profile] eastpath. A balance of drama and comedy and pathos in this chapter. And yep, a number of the core cast members have re-emerged from Instrumentality (still not sure who else will be returning: I'm figuring it out as I go along).

Fuyutsuki debated bringing Gendo to the hospital on the other side of the mountains, but considering the patient's condition, he decided it was not worth trying to move him further than the mile up the slope to the hotel-turned-refuge. He lifted Gendo and slung him over his shoulder carefully.

"Sabia, could you support his arm and keep it elevated?" he asked.

"After the last time I had any physical contact with him, I'm almost afraid to," she admitted, clearly thinking of the encounter which had started to crack the veil that surrounded her true nature.

"He's no longer merged with Adam, so I doubt there will be a repeat of that incident."

Sabia reached out and carefully cradled Gendo's arm as she fell in step beside Fuyutsuki. The former commander of NERV winced and moaned at her touch, but made no other reaction.

Helping him again? And you never really cared much for him. You only assisted him because of Yui, and to keep her legacy alive, Fuyutsuki thought, as they mounted the path back to the refuge Now why are you assisting him, aside from a professional duty to a suffering human being? Is this because of the boy? Will they even want to see each other, especially in these circumstances.

They found Aoba and Misato sorting through a box of salvaged supplies in the hotel kitchen, Pen-Pen watching the proceedings from atop another table.

"Canned shrimp for the bird," Aoba said, holding up a flat can, then staring over Misato's shoulder. "Holy hell, Commander Ikari."

Misato turned and almost let out a small yelp of surprise. “Oh man, what happened to him? Where did you find him?”

"We found him floating in the sea. Clear this table off: we need to stabilize him," Fuyutsuki ordered.

Misato fluttered to move aside the stacks of cans and boxes that stood scattered on the table. “Sorry for the mess! We didn’t expect you’d be back this soon and ah, is this place really all right for a surgery? I mean if Shinji finds out you found him alive --” she chattered.

“What the hell happened to his hand?” Aoba said. “Looks like someone sliced it off.”

“We’re not sure, he was like this when we found him,” Fuyutsuki said. With Sabia’s assistance, he laid Gendo on the table, finding a small stack of towels to prop the patient’s arm on.

“Maybe he can tell us when he’s more alert,” Aoba said. “What are you going to need to stitch him up?”

“He’s not ready for that, he’s in shock and it could worsen his condition,” Fuyutsuki said. “The goal right now is to stabilize him. But I will need some antiseptic, bandages, antibiotics and pain killers; ideally we’d run a saline drip on him and give him a transfusion, but that would depend on having a matching blood-type or at least a close relative.”

At that moment, Shinji walked into the room. “Anyone, um, want me to help cook some soup--” He stopped mid-sentence and halted in his tracks, staring dumb-founded at the figure lying on the table. “What? Where did you find him? Who brought him back?!” the boy cried.

“He brought himself back, the same way we all did,” Sabia said.

“Then why did you bring him here?! He tried to kill me! He tried to kill us all!” Shinji started to take a step toward the table on which his father lay, but Aoba blocked him, holding him back.

“Shinji, this is not the time and place for this kind of outburst,” Fuyutsuki ordered.

Shinji tried to shake off Aoba. “Why didn’t you just leave him there to die? He deserves it! He used me! He used all of us! Get him out of here! Get him out!”

“Kid, calm down, Fuyutsuki’s just doing his job as a doctor,” Aoba said.

“And I cannot do that job with this commotion. Get that boy out of here," Fuyutsuki snapped. Pen-Pen let out a small squawk and skittered to the far end of the counter he perched on. "And get the penguin out, too!"

"Aw, you went through Third Impact and you're still a grouchy old goat," Misato snipped, but she scooped Pen-Pen up in her arms and carried the now-objecting penguin out of the room.

"My son... let my son stay here..." Gendo said, his voice thready with pain. “Shinji…?” he tried to sit up.

"Ikari, I wouldn't advise that--" Fuyutsuki said, pushing him back down onto the tabletop.

"He never wanted me near him before, why would he start now?!" Shinji snapped.

Sabia approached Shinji and put a hand on the boy‘s arm. “Because there’s a first time for everything, even reconciling with someone who’s cut your soul to the core.”

Shinji tried to push her away. “Don’t tell me what to do! You aren’t my mother!”

Sabia gripped his arm, and touched his face with her free hand. “No, I’m not, but I’ve experienced a lot of life and I know what it’s like to have it get under your skin.”

“Omake”

(Because this popped into my head when I was writing it. Folks who hang around The Eva Geeks Commentary site and TV Tropes will notice some of the references.)

Pen-Pen let out an angry chatter and flapped his flippers in Fuyutsuki’s general direction.

“Hey, it’s a case of Extreme Penguin Reaction, and it’s a penguin doing it,” Misato said, laughing.

Fuyutsuki covered his eyes with one hand, letting out a harassed noise. “You’re embarrassing us again.”

"Aw, you went through Third Impact and you're still a grouchy old goat," Misato snipped, but she scooped Pen-Pen up in her arms and carried the now-objecting penguin out of the room. “Everything’s better with penguins, you know.”

LOL Awesome!

I love how not even Instrumentality can change Shinji much :)

Mmm, I'm thinking Shinji managed to come to terms with his mother's disappearance (he gets to say goodbye to her personally toward the end of End of Evangelion, after all), but he's still got the rejection/abandonment issues to work out with his father. That's going to be fun to write.
