A Legacy of Christmas Lights
Dec. 5th, 2004 05:10 pmAll through my childhood, every December for as long as I could remember, our next-door neighbors, specifically "Adele"'s adoptive mom (a very sweet German lady who was born and raised in Germany and came over here after she met and married her American husband, following WWII), used to put lights on a small fir tree that stood near their garage, where I could see it from the crib, later a cot bed in our dining room where I used to sleep when I was small. Even when I moved into the room at the top of the stairs to our second floor, I could still see our neighbors' tree at night when I went to bed. I used to watch it until they unplugged it for the night, which was my signal to Go To Sleep. One of the things I missed the most when I moved out of the teeny room into the larger room down the hallway was watching the neighbors' outdoor Christmas tree
Adele's mom passed away earlier this year, but I wanted to carry on her legacy of light. I was tempted to sneak into Adele's yard and put some lights on a bush or a tree there, but then I decided to put some lights on a tree on the embankment of our driveway, which borders her yard. So... I slipped out this afternoon and put some colored lights on a six-foot White Pine tree... I just have to ask my dad about running an extension cord to it... won't Adele be surprised... I hope she likes it!
