Another fandom to avoid like the plague
Jan. 3rd, 2006 05:05 pmRemind me never to go looking at "A Knight's Tale" fanfics. I just took a look at the AK'sT section on ff.n and what did I come up with, but, on the first page:
--Wat/Chaucer slash. I don't see that at all, particularly since Wat reminds me eeriely of Mark, so it's like slashing my best buddy.
--William/Chaucer slash. All right, I could almost accept UST (unresolved sexual tension), but not outright slash. William, for all intents and purposes, is straight, considering how gaa-gaa he is over Jocelyn. Sure, he's closer to his three buddies than he is to Kate, the female blacksmith, but Kate is, effectively, "one of the boys". Close friendship among guys =/= TEH GAY!!111111 (Okay, it may not necessarily equal that, but I couldn't think of the right sort of punctuation marks to use). After all, the medieval age wasn't exactly a gay-friendly era. I seem to remember reading somewhere about a gay prince of England who was excuted for his "crimes against nature" by having a red-hot poker jammed up his anus. Gugh. But for that matter, the whole film has a refreshing, lumbering sort of innocence about it, like a St. Bernard puppy. Even the scene where Jocelyn comes to William's tent in the night was handled very tastefully. I don't wanna see that innocence mauled.
--A Mary Sue fic with two Sues (William fanbrats in disguise). No. Just... no. I imagine William, aka. "Sir Ulrich von Lichtenstein probably had tons of fangirls, and it would be funny to see a fic like that... it would make a really cute parody, but I don't wanna see the fanbrats contaminating the waters, s'il-vous plait.
--A Gary Stu named Xander, and the author's name is Xander. Not the most medieval sounding name, either, and despite the charming anachronisms in the film, this wouldn't work. Alisaunder might work better.
