matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Dean Winchester)
Disclaimer: This is not an anti-slash rant. I'm fond of a few slash pairings myself, but I'm not the biggest fan of slash since the very first slash fic I ever read was very badly done and it squicked me out. That old "first impression" sort of thing. This is not an anti-homosexual rant, either, since I'm bisexual myself and I have nothing but respect for people whose quirks run certain ways.

Disclaimer edited to add: I also have to add that I am totally put off by incest fics, since I have seen what incest can do to a family in real life. It isn't pretty.

((Sorry if that sounded a bit heavy-handed. I'm just trying to clear the air of any volitile elements that could explode into wank.))

I'm going into withdrawal, waiting for the new episodes of the WB's "Supernatural" to start airing, and I've tried to quench my cravings by reading fanfics. Unfortunately, all I keep running across are:

1). Mary Sues, who generally turn out to be Dean's girlfriend/Sam's twin sister/the mysterious girl who helps the Winchesters with their jobs. All right, I could accept an OFC who's Dean's girl, but remember that Dean isn't the sort who puts down roots. He's a bit of a player, but not a horrible one. He's like the sailor who has a girl in every port. She's just not gonna make a good boy out of him, he just wouldn't be lovably snarky, livin' on the edge Dean. Sam's the good boy of the family: we don't need two good boys, or the show would lose its panache.

Sam's twin sister... No, just... no. Are we watching the same show? Every episode, they start off with a capsulated version of the story so far, complete with the fatal night when the nameless thing killed Mary Winchester. I distinctly remember there being only two kids, both of them boys. I distinctly remember John Winchester yelling to a then-much-younger Dean, "Take your little brother outside!" as John goes to see what the hell is going on in their house. Not "Your little brother and sister." Maybe, just *maybe* John Winchester might have fathered another child by another woman during his wanderings, but I somehow don't think so, considering that the reason he took up hunting spooks was to avenge his wife's horrible death, part of him might still be carrying at least a candle to the memory of his wife. Even still, that kid might be considerably younger than Sam, probably a pre-teenager (if we consider that John probably didn't start moving around from job to job until Sam was at least school-age), and I don't think you'd really wanna see a whiny middle-school brat tagging along with the Winchester brothers. Though that would make one hell of a funny parody fic, and you might be able to make the long-lost tag-along kid sibling turn out to be a changeling.

The mysterious girl: Moot point. Insta-Sue. Unless she's someone like Missouri, who offers help, but doesn't steal the fire from the brothers.

2). Wincest. Just. Plain. Icky. See subject 1. first paragraph. As far as we can tell, Dean is skirt-chaser. He likes a nice pair of melons with a lovely set of stems. Remember the part in one episode when they're in a poolhall bar and a cute girl with a little top and low-risers is giving the brothers the once-over, then Dean turns to Sam to say, "We're allowed to have fun, y'know. [Points to the girl] *That's* fun." Sam had a girlfriend, Jessica, who met the same fate as his mother, which is what compelled him to decide to take up the "family business" again in the first place. Yes, I know, they could be bi for all we know. There just isn't enough canonical evidence to support these claims. Notwithstanding the part in "Bugs" where the brothers are at the open house in the upscale housing development and one of the realtors thinks the brothers are a gay couple, and Dean teasingly calls Sam "honey". He's creating a cover. If there's any chemistry between these guys, it is brotherly love and teamwork. Remember, fanbrats, it is possible to love someone without being horny for them. It's called family love or friendship. If you think otherwise, you might want to consider checking in with a good counsellor to help you sort these things out (OT: Teenagers can act so crazy sometimes and they seem to get such wierd ideas that I've often wondered if adolesence should be filed in the DSM-IV as a form of temporary insanity, but I digress).

Which leads me to a nightmare that I've been having: Wincest with Mpreg. Ugh. It seems like every fandom that's attracted slash like fruitflies to a bunch of bananas winds up with an assbaby crawling around somewhere. I do *NOT* want to see either one of the brothers, especially Dean, Mpreg-nated (yes, I made up that word). I know the fandom is called "Supernatural", but that doesn't mean biology gets tossed out the window. The rules of human physiology still apply to the brothers, even if they are spook hunters. The only times I could find Mpreg remotely plausible is if:

--The fandom is science fiction and the male characters are aliens/some sort of non-humans (eg. AIs living in a virtual reality construct, where said AIs have a human 'shell' that looks male).
--The fandom is fantasy and magic is involved.

"Supernatural" is a horror series. There's no magic involved. The folk-wisdom stuff that the brothers have employed (eg. the herbs and things that Missouri has them ward their old house with to block the spook that's tormenting the new family who moved in) does not really count, since it doesn't involve casting spells/twiddling with the elements. It's just blocking the negative forces of the spooks.

Sorry if any of that was over the top. I just needed to get all that off my chest.

((Originally posted on "fanficrants", but was removed since people started fighting over it. Am I a magnet for crazies? Do I have to get a barrage of angry posters jumping all over me every time I blow off some steam?! I didn't mean to start a fight. Why do my posts always have to cause wars? Maybe I should just stop posting entirely or friends-lock this LJ...))
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Death with Umbrella)
I managed to get the lousy paperwork done this afternoon, after pulling in a busy six-hour shift. My nerves are a bit frayed from all that, and from some LJ-related difficulties that I'm really not comfortable discussing.

Notes from last night: My dad and I nipped up to Methuen again. He was trying to buy up some of the marked-down silk Christmas greenery to use in Christmas baskets next year, to help a buddy of his who has a small farm stand/garden center in Woburn, just whistling distance from where my dad works. I wanted to see if the Border's at the Loop Mall still had David Guinn's "The Autobiography of Santa Claus", since I tried getting it at the Barnes & Noble downtown, to no luck. Well, Border's didn't have it either, but they had the two volumes of the "Sandman Comics" that I was missing, namely "A Season of Mists" and "A Game of You", so I snatched those up. Merry Christmas to me!

And I had a lovely RP chat with [livejournal.com profile] crowdog66, in which we successfully ported Sieges into DegSep, and in which Lucien, the Merv's former secretary/love slave/personal dartboard, had an at-times fearful but mostly touching conversation with the One and the Opposite...
