Title: The Reaper in the Shadows
Day/Theme: August 4: Tell him who looks for heaven to run along to hell.
Series: "The Matrix Online"
Character/Pairing: Same cast as "Fearing the Reaper" (Sieges [my character], WGAnubis/Marrith, and "Zeneon" the Zion frat-boy), only with additional characters including: Nucl3ar, Noxu, and theNorseman (:: Waves:: Hi, guys!).
Rating: PG-13 (creepiness)
Note: Follow-up to "Fearing the Reaper". I'd originally meant that to be a one-shot, but WGAnubis liked the story so much, he encouraged me to write more. I think it's going to turn into a three-part series, of which this is Part Two.
On board Zeneon's ship, which he simply called "Zeneon's Ship" -- he'd always thought giving your ship some wierd name no one knew how to say was pretty lame -- Dex, the operator, yanked the last of Zeneon's plugs free, then checked his pulse at his throat. It fluttered under his fingertips, but it still beat.
Zeneon groaned and sat up, putting his hands to his aching temples. "Ugh... what happened in there?"
"That's what I was gonna ask you," Dex asked. "That Exile, or whatever it was, tried to fry your RSI, but at least something distracted it before it took you down. I pulled you out.
Can't lose a guy like you to one of those mangy wolves."
"Is that all he was doing? I thought he was killing me," Zeneon said. He started to get up from his chair. Dex caught his arm and draped it over his shoulder.
"Careful there, you look like hell," he said.
Zeneon let Dex lead him out of the core and down the hallway to his quarters. "I feel like it, too." He knew he wouldn't be jacking in for a while.

A week had passed Matrix-side, according to Zeneon's crew, who'd been jacking in, keeping an eye on things while he recovered from his rough encounter with the Exile-thing. When he finally felt strong enough to jack in, he still didn't quite feel up to heading right for his usual haunt in Mara Central. He'd heard from 3unity, his First Mate, that a lot of Redpills seemed to hang around the central hardline in Camon Heights; on that information, he had Dex put him in there.
The place was crowded with Redpills, but he didn't see many of them scuffling. A lot of them were hanging around, talking to each other in low whispers, but off to one side, two guys whom he knew ran with that Devil-whatchamacallashit-Merv group were sparring: a dark guy dressed in black with a beret perched on his head, and a blond guy with red and black tattoos on his face. On a bench not too far away, the little girl in red with the big sub-machineguns sat holding hands with a wide-shouldered, red-haired guy and watching the guys fighting. The big guy must be that boyfriend she'd mentioned; he scanned like he'd finished his training: normally, Zeneon would have challenged him to a fight, but he somehow didn't feel up to it. He scanned the little girl's code: looked like she'd been working during the past week and finished the next two levels of her training. She still conned weaker than him, but he decided not to bug her. Not just because her boyfriend was there. He had a funny feeling about this place, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He thought he saw something standing behind the Merv-girl, something in black with a cross tattooed over his face, but when he looked again, he saw a regular-looking Redpill-guy with tousled brown hair.
Zeneon shook his head. What the hell is up with this place? Something wrong with the code he thought. He decided to take a walk to clear his head. He approached the hardline and called Dex to put him down in International...
....He teleported to Kowloon and headed for the boardwalk by the big pond there. 3unity had shown him the place some time ago and he tended to hang out there even when she wasn't jacked in.
He sat on a bench under the glowing red lanterns strung along the water's edge, letting the night breeze fan his face. Maybe that wierd thing he'd seen was just a glitch in the code... or maybe it was something the damned Machines had sent to bug him. Wasn't Smith the Agent sent to bother Neo specifically? Maybe the thing that had tried to croggle his RSI was something like that.
Footsteps approached. He jolted at the sound, then cursed himself for jumping. Not very One-ly to be afraid of noises. He looked up to see the Merv-girl run past him, her boyfriend and the blond guy following her.
Maybe he only thought he saw that shadowy thing following her...
