Utterly lovely day:
-- Went to Mass at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes in Newton, the new home of my parish. I'll admit, it's a little sad to have to be going to a completely new church and seeing us all crammed into a smaller space we'll have to share with the parish that was already there. Holy Trinity is a huge Gothic structure, almost a mini-cathedral, and MIL is exactly half the size, thus we're a little crowded between the new folks and the folks already going there: and the numerous small children making noise have less space to fill with their racket, so unfortunately, I caught myself doing my irate desert-dog glare in their general direction a lot more than I used to. But, it's a really lovely Romanesque brick structure with some wonderful trompe l'oiel paintings on the walls and the ceiling: I thought the ceiling was goffered at first, but then I realised it was a fresco painted to look like goffering. Father Charles Higgins, one of the kindest and most gentler priests I know, a man who clearly loves serving the Church and its people, said the Mass and also led the Corpus Christi procession that followed. And this was almost an old-school Corpus Christi procession, like they do in some parts of Europe to this day, with the priest carrying the Blessed Sacrament down the street and the congregation following, singing hymns, and kids scattering flower petals along the path. We only went just around the block, but it was cool to see the reaction from people around us: some of the neighbors paused on their doorsteps or stuck their heads out of windows to watch. A few cars passing by even slowed down to watch.
-- Visit to the John F. Kennedy Birthplace in Brighton. I'm a history nut, and my dad is a bit of a J.F.K. fan, so the three of us scoured all over Brighton trying to find this lovely little National Historical Site, tucked away on a side street off a side street. It's a cozy little place: we'd arrived too late for the guided tour, but there was the option of an audio tour featuring Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy talking about the family home. Interesting little bit: JFK's favorite books when he was a kid were "Billy Whiskers: The Autobiography of a Goat", which I remember reading part of in grade school, and "King Arthur".
-- Lovely gifts from my folks, including a boxed set of the third season of "The Waltons", which I remember watching when I was just a wee kid; I think it was my first favorite TV show; also Ven. Anne Catherine Emmerich's "The Life of Mary Magdalen", based off her incredible visions of the life of Christ and His followers and contemporaries.
