When in despair... reach for the badfic!

But I've been amusing myself by reading this "Hellsing" fic, as reccommended by Weaver, aka nightofcydonia, when I put out the challenge to find a "Hellsing" mpreg fic: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2847586/1/The_Way_to_an_Heir

Now, in all honesty, I can't decide if it's bad or not. It's fairly well-written, aside from grammatical glitches and spelling errors (English is, apparantly, not the author's first language, so I excuse those errors). But there is some OOC-ness -- specifically a romantic Alucard (the execution keeps conjuring images of David Boreanz as Angel in "Buffy the Vampire-Slayer; I try reading the story with Crispin Freeman's voice in mind, but it keeps sounding out of place) and plenty of Alucard/Integra romance, but it's not enough to make me sick -- it ties into the anime-verse, and since I'm more of a manga/OVA-verse person, I cut the anime-verse folks a lot more slack. I have to admit, it's got one of the most ...interesting sex scenes I've ever seen. It has to be read to be fully understood. And the pregnancy itself... cliches abound, but somehow it manages to remain true to it's wierd logic. I'm only on chapter 10 of... 16. We'll see if it's GAFF-worthy or not.

I think that that particular flavor of OOC is fairly widespread. Mostly I do the same as you though, reason that it's the anime (which I haven't seen) and give it the benefit of the doubt.

I think of the anime-version as an AU anyway (hate to sound like a canon-nazi and say that I view the manga/OVA-verse as the mainline canon), so I'm a lot more indulgent towards fics set in the anime-verse.

Finally finished the fic: I have to say, that was one of the better-executed Mpregs I've seen in a while. There could have been a little more done to make it more convincing, but it wasn't gag-inducingly bad. The birthing scene was very plausibly done, IMNSHO.

I'll have to take your word for it since I skipped that bit (I know how my memory works. If I read something I then wish I didn't, you can guarantee that it'll be stuck in my head indefinitely. So I've learned to err on the side of caution and skip anything that looks iffy).
