Shades of Clement C. Moore, the Health and Diet Police have got to turn in their badges now
Is nothing sacred any more? Come on, Santa Claus is an *ICON*, chubbiness and all. I can concede to eliminating his pipe and I can understand department store/mall Santas asking the parents if the kid can sit in his lap, but narrowing his beltline?! Give me a break. He's Santa Claus, not David Beckham, for goodness sake.
Maybe, as a concession, we can go with those Old World Santas (aka Father Christmas) since they tend to be slimmer anyway. But I can see the ACLU and other nutbag groups getting bent out of shape over the "Father" part, mistaking it for the title of a Catholic or Anglican priest.
This is also an affront to people who have a bit of meat on their bones for reasons out of their control. Santa Claus has been their key rolemodel since at least the publication of Clement C. Moore's "A Visit from Santa Claus" (aka "The Night Before Christmas"); they should not have this taken away from them.
...Ironically, I myself am agnostic about Santa Claus. I think I've said elsewhere that I was terrified of guys with beards when I was a kid, thus, the gift-bringer at our house was the Christmas Angel or the Christ Child, or the Three Wise Men. But I have a profound respect for those who believe in Santa and I hate seeing their image get trampled on by the iconoclasts and their rules and regulations.
