Water mains and winged widgets

Flurry, after Flurry Knox, the flirtatious and hysterically inept fox-hunter in Sullivan and Ross's "The Irish R.M.", which was one of our favorite TV series (on PBS, since it's a Irish import) when I was a kid. The little guy is starting to settle in: he's pecking at his seed and taking little beakfuls of water from his dish. He's also started singing and chittering a bit, but he's still rather leery of us. Although... I saw him let my mom pet his head as she was giving him fresh water before she covered him up for the night.
I took a nap this afternoon and when I woke up and started for the bathroom to get myself a drink of water, my mom warned me not to as... the water main in front of the house had broken and the DPW had shut the water off so they could replace the section of busted pipe. I missed watching them remove the pipe (which had simply deteriorated since it had been down there since the 1940s) but it was interesting to watch the water department guys tinkering with the valve for the water main. This involved a lot of quiddling with the fire hydrant in front of the house, then more quiddling with a previously buried valve... And then water started flowing from an open valve on the side of the hydrant, growing stronger after a minute. I couldn't help but hear the prelude from Wagner's "Das Rheingold" in my head:
