matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Fuyutsuki)

Yes, I can has Fuyutsuki icon (that isn't the "*Facepalm*" shot from Episode 9). I decided to post something pre-End of Evangelion for a change, and as such, I think this series is turning into two major parts: "The Grigori Continuum" (being set from roughly the start of NGE to somewhere towards the end of EoE) and "Under the Winter Moon" (set at the end of EoE and continuing from there). I wanted to make this a trilogy, but it didn't seem to want to go that way, and considering how the last volume of Storm Constantine's Grigori trilogy turned out, I didn't want to my series, which was partly inspired by it, to suffer the same fate.

And yes, there is a wee bit of a naughty pun in the title of the second half of my series: the name "Fuyutsuki" translates to "winter moon", and there's a double entendre involved: 1). I'm setting the series in the winter and 2). it has quite a bit to do with the relationship between Fuyutsuki and Sabia Valiant... you see where I'm going with that one. :: Laughs:: I can just hear Kajii making some wise remark about that, but no, I won't be resurrecting him post failure of Instrumentality: as far as I can tell, he met his end a few days before Third Impact, and unless Tang'ing applies to recent corpses (or at least ones that are more than a few minutes old... :: Cringes a little at the memory of some of the imagery in EoE:: ), I doubt there is any way to bring him back. Sorry, fangirls...

Title: "(Please) Get Out of My Space"
Day/Theme: August 30) I wanted to see you walking away from me
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion ("The Grigori Continuum")
Character/Pairing: Ryoji Kajii/OFC
Rating: PG-13 (just to be safe)

Author's Note: Something set a bit earlier in the timeline of the ambitious NGE project (and one that doesn't involve Fuyutsuki). I was going to write a confrontation between Sabia Valiant and Gendo Ikari, inspired by this theme, but I realized I don't write him very well -- but I also realized that my heroine didn't quite get along with Kaji either. Set sometime during the end of Episode 21, after Fuyutsuki's release and before Kaji's assassination (more about that in another fragment...):

The doorbell of her apartment buzzed insistently. Sabia got up from her desk and approached, her blood starting to run a few degrees colder from the bad news she expected. She peered through the peephole to spy Kajii standing outside, leaning against the door jamb.

"May I come in, Miss Valiant? I bring you tidings of great joy," he said.

Her blood temperature started to spike, but not for the reasons the interloper would have preferred. "You may come in, but I must inform you that you cannot stay for long," she replied, undoing the chain and opening the door for him.

He slouched into the room, but something about his usual leisurely posture seemed more a mask than his typical demeanor. He glanced to the door. "Would you close the door? I wouldn't want to give scandal to my female admirers, in case prying eyes should see."

"If you insist, but you may only stay long enough to give me the news," she said and reaching for the door, pushed it shut.

He stepped close to her, putting his hands on her shoulders as he backed her against the furthest wall. "Despite your usual protestations, I must close the gap between us," he said in a low voice, leaning in so close to her ear, his lips brushed her skin. Her spine straightened, affected by his touch, but her heart remained cold within her. "I suspect there is a hidden camera or two close by, as well as some hidden microphones strategically placed to pick up anything we might say," he added, dead serious for a moment.

"The bedroom?" she suggested, in a low voice.

"Mmm, perhaps you aren't so resistant to my charms after all," he murmured.

She started to say, "Don't be absurd," but stopped herself and reaching for the sliding door that communicated with the inner room, she pushed it open and backed into the room, drawing him after her. She pushed the door shut behind her and set her back to it, folding her arms over her chest.

He smirked at her and leaned one hand on the wall beside her head. "Not your first time bringing a male visitor in here? You made that movement a little too smoothly; so you let the old doctor in here for a check-up, I take it?"

"Don't be absurd, Mr. Kajii; Fuyutsuki and I have purely professional relationship, though we have become fond of each other as academics," Sabia replied, glaring at his arm.

"Well, whatever the case, you will be pleased to know that your grey-haired light of love is free to return to your side whenever you will let him shine on you," Kajii said. "Though if I hadn't been successful in throwing the right switches, I would be more than honored to do my best to console you --"

"Please, don't pride yourself on making any headway, whatever happened to him," Sabia snarled, pushing him away.

The skin on her palm prickled and a purplish aura showed around it. No, not now, she thought. Kajii staggered back, wincing and clutching his shoulder. The glow faded from her hand. He stared at her, his eyes tracking from her hand to her face.

"I had heard rumors, but I didn't know they had any truth to them," he said.

"I lived among Grigori, and it isn't unusual for humans to pick up some of their traits," she said, but somehow that sounded phony even in her own ears, though she could not say why.

He glanced to the door, then looked her in the eye. "Your secrets are safe with me, as long as my secrets are safe with you. I can see why you wouldn't have closed the gap with him: that AT Field must make it hard to entertain gentlemen callers."

"You've told me what happened, now get going," she said.

"Well, I would kiss you good night, but there's no telling what your built-in taser might do to me," he said, teasingly. "Good night, Angel-Girl."

"Go," she snapped, dropping her gaze. She heard him blow her a kiss, then heard his footsteps as he let himself out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Note on the AT Field: Bit of a spoiler, but Sabia has no idea what she actually is, and since Grigori are Angels who chose to take on and sustain human forms, she has a rudimentary AT Field, although it manifests only when she feels threatened or is in an otherwise heightened state of emotion. This becomes a sticky point later on...

Can't wait to see what that sticky point later on is :)

I was originally going to write about that sticking point, but I had to juggle a few details and I started running out of time... Plus, it ended up being a bit... weird.
