Dreary Monday full of odds and ends

I had every intention of getting up earlier this morning, since I had errands to run, but the grey skies played a role in causing me to wake up just after noon. Much as I keep vampire hours, I try to get up before noon on days that I'm not working, even if that translates to 11.30 a.m.

One of those errands entailed a run to Wal-Mart for some odds and ends, including pricing rimless eyeglasses. Which aren't cheap: $125 for the frames and another $100 for the lenses, plus I need to have my eyes checked. I'm hoping MediCare will cover them, but this might go over the limit. We'll see.

The flyer for next year's Boskone came today: none of the special guests seem to ring any bells with me, so I'm looking at other cons. Arisia looks neat, though it's in January and that could be a problem, weather-wise. I also looked at AnimeBoston, since I'm looking for a good anime con, but this year it falls on the weekend of Easter, so it's out of the question: better luck next year. And there's a one-day anime con in March at Salem State College, which I might give a go. Which brings me to the wacky costuming ideas, which include:

--Kaworu from Neon Genesis Evangelion. One of the more likely ideas, since much of his outfit is fairly simple, except I'd need a grey cosplay wig. May or may not be a good idea, given the number of fangirls this guy has.

--Muraki from (wait for it...) Yami no Matsuei. Except I'd have to hunt for a white suit and a white top coat as well as investing in a silver cosply wig. And again: fangirls. Though it might be fun to weird them out.

--And then there's the joke Death Note character: "Lambda, L's twin sister just not mentioned in the anime or the manga" This was meant as a commentary on both Mary Sues and the sheer number of L cosplayers which (I'm told) turn up at cons. Plus I look like I ought to be L's twin sister, thus it be almost like dressing as myself.

It is true that you get a lot of L cosplayers, probably because if you have dark hair he's pretty much the easiest cosplay on the planet. I went to a small one day con on the 21st November and I counted at least three of them, plus one blood covered Beyond Birthday. I'm not sure many people would get the commentary/joke aspect of the Lambda costume though, but given that I'm toying with the idea of a 'British Soul Reaper' costume to try and inject some originality into the now overdone Bleach cosplay (plus what I've got in mind looks pretty good, if a bit LARP-ish), I can't really talk.

I've yet to actually watch Bleach, though I've got it bookmarked on My Anime List -- your post plus some Bleach/YnM crossovers I stumbled across made me remember that I'd tagged it under "Plan to Watch".

To tell the truth, I haven't seen all that much of it, not least because I tend to be put off by series which are that long (seriously, it's getting ridiculous). But I've seen enough to know who everyone is and what it's about, and Bleach cosplayers (or, more accurately, the number of people who wear the uniforms without trying to be a specific character) are starting to become a bit of a joke. Plus I saw a discussion regarding the fact that it didn't make sense for a bunch of Japanese people to handle reaping duties for the whole world and I got inspired. If nothing else, it'd be original.

Hee, based on this discussion, I think I'll start watching this one next, but I hear you about verrrrrry long series: "Blood+" is about 50 episodes long, and while I enjoyed it and it held my interest, I had to take a break from it since there were so dang many episodes.

Plus I saw a discussion regarding the fact that it didn't make sense for a bunch of Japanese people to handle reaping duties for the whole world and I got inspired.

I guess this is an example of what TvTropes.org "Tokyo is the Center of the Universe": Yami no Matsuei seems to have this quirk as well. The manga states that there's eighteen shinigami working for the Ministry of Hades... and there's about eight of them working in Japan alone (add to this, there's not a whole lot of difference between anime continuity and manga continuity, except that they tightened up a few weak spots in the story arcs that they animated; too bad there's only 13 episodes, plus the manga has been on hiatus since 2001 when the artist hurt her wrist. Pretty good anime, if you can put up with the obvious subtext and Muraki's voice actor in the dub, who sounds something like Ralph Fiennes with a head-cold). I kind of had to do a little ret-conning when I started my Twhineliite crossover fic, when I made mention of "the Seattle office".
