matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Spike_Spiegel)

Even since the end of NaNoWriMo, I've been continuing to watch a bunch of anime, which has prompted some weird remarks from me:

"Death Note Rewrite Part 1" (Which is pretty much a clip show based on the first season of Death Note, but still interesting): "Ryuk and his apples... Tsuzuki [In Yami no Matsuei] and his apple pie. What *IS* this shinigami and apples?!"

"Those Who Hunt Elves" (Which despite it's strange premise -- a martial arts dude, an Oscar-winning actress and a sixteen year old tomboyish military otaku, along with a tank, get bamfed into a High Epic fantasy world and in order to get back to Japan, they have to find the missing fragments of a botched spell which has stuck to the skin of five elves -- is actually very good and screamingly funny): This prompted some "Hey, It's That Voice" moments, including --

"How'd Kensuke Aida end up in this?" Kurt Stoll, one of the Evangelion dub actors in a small part

Even more strange: "Why am I hearing TV-version!Fuyutsuki in this crowd of villagers?" Guil Lunde doing "spear carrier duty".

"Bleach" (one episode down... how many to go?? :: Stares at the list on justdubs.net::): "Okay. Now what's this about having the last name Kurosaki and becoming a death god??" (Since -- wait for it -- YnM also has a death god whose last name is Kurosaki. No wonder there's a few crossover fics...)

Regarding the apple thing; apparently apples are used to symbolised the soul, (not sure in which culture though) so death gods eating them is rather morbidly appropriate.

Regarding the Kurosaki thing: depending on when the respective series came out, one could be named in honour of the other, or alteratively, Kurosaki apparently translates as something like 'black cloak', which would possibly fall under the heading of meaningful names.

An adjustment to the apple theory. Since I knew that tvtropes.org has a page on apples in fiction (entitled How do you like them apples), I went and had a look out of curiousity after my comment and I found something interesting. Apparently, some sources describe the angel of death Azrael as using apples to entice souls from dead bodies, which again would explain the apparent apple fixation of shinigami.

Hah... Re: the Azrael reference: this gets more and more interesting... If I remember correctly, the YnM manga started publication in 1995, and Bleach didn't start until 2001 (about the time the anime of YnM started airing), so the Kurosaki connection is likely a nod to YnM. It's also a somewhat ironic name, since the Kurosaki in YnM usually wears modestly bright colors, while his partner, the somewhat dorky Tsuzuki wears a somewhat rumpled black suit and a black trenchcoat.
