matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (NERV)

What's winter and Christmas without a snowball fight? I've been itching to write this fic ever since I picked up the [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 table and discovered one of the prompts is "snow". Granted, I had to Handwave why it's snowing in the Evangelion-verse, but it works.

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas, the Matrix Refugee fanficced for ye:

An Evangelion snowball fight,
Midnight Mass in the Trinity Blood-verse,
Doctor Hobby wracking Joe's brain,
One Meifu Christmas office party,
A drunken Evangelion New Year's party,
Redpills stealing a Christmas tree,
Harry Dresden for the holidays,
Frank Sweitz adopting a David unit,
One Chateau Christmas party,
One Christmas spirit in the American Gods 'verse,
and An A.I. fic with David decorating his first Christmas tree.

"Post-Apocalyptic Snowball Fight"

by "Matrix Refugee"

Disclaimer: I do not own Neon Genesis Evangelion, it's characters, concepts or other indicia, which are the property of Hideaki Anno, Project Eva-Gainax/khara, et al.

Author's Note: Just a fun bit that I wrote for Neon Enoch Evangelion, more of a winter fic than a Christmas one, but Christmas is partly about family and being together and I thought I'd show the post-Instrumentality survivors just being a family for a change. There's a lot of angsty post-End of Evangelion fics (rightly so, considering what happened), so I thought I'd give these folks a reason to take a break from the angst.

Fuyutsuki awoke to a silvery half-light that he dimly recognized. perhaps from a dream or a memory of the past. The air in the bedroom felt chillier than it had when he and Sabia had gone to bed. He contemplated staying put a little while longer, but there was work to be done: canned food to be salvaged from the village, a shortwave radio broadcast to be made to any other survivors.

Then he felt Sabia nudge him as she knelt over him. "Look out the window," she said.

Slipping from under her, he got up, finding his trousers and pulled them on before going to the window, pulling up the shade.

The world that had only started to grow back its mantle of sleeping plants and trees the night before now lay buried under a cloak of white. Snowflakes still sifted down from above.

Memories of childhood snowball fights and digging small caves under a snowbank came back to him, but he set these aside for more practical concerns. "It snowed..." he said, his voice hushed in awe. Somehow, the very sight of snow seemed a benediction from heaven, a sign that things would continue to resolve themselves and return to some semblance of normality.

Sabia cocked her head, listening. "I think the youngsters are awake and wondering as well." She found his shirt and held it up to him. "We'd better get going before it gets any deeper out there."

When they arrived in the hotel living room, Shinji was helping Asuka change the bandages on her arm; the lacerations were healing well. "You don't remember ever seeing snow?" she said. "There's enough mountains here; someone must have taken you up there."

"My aunt and uncle might have, but I barely remember it," Shinji admitted.

Misato came in from the kitchen, already bundled up in a heavy coat. "Hey, you kids ready to help clear some snow?" she asked.

"Sure, once I finish with these bandages," Shinji said.

"Oh, let the men take care of it, that's heavy work," Asuka whined. "You need two good arms to shovel snow."

"You can still use a broom to brush away the lighter snow," Misato said.

"I will need all the help I can get," Fuyutsuki said. Let her make herself useful for a change, he thought.

"Aoba and Huyuuga started clearing a path to the village: we needed more bandages and antibiotic rinse for Asuka's arm," Misato said.

"And you need to eat first if you plan on shoveling any snow," Sabia said.

An hour later, Fuyutsuki had set to work clearing out the sides of the log-pile, preparatory to clearing the top off with a broom. The first significant snow in fifteen years, he thought. There had been some snowfall the first few years after Second Impact, but none that had lasted except in the higher elevations, until about ten years ago, when the snow stopped falling entirely. He remembered a time when shoveling snow had seemed just another task to add to the day's work, the times he had to clear off his balcony or the sidewalks near the apartment building where he lived, when he was still teaching in Kyoto. Now it seemed like welcome exercise, a moment in which to think ahead. Granted, the snow had added an extra amount of concern: he had been planning to make a trip to one of NERV's hidden supply depots in the mountains and now they would have to clear snow away from the entrance, to say nothing of how the snow would add time to the trip into the mountains. And he regretted they would not likely be able to go down to the village and the red sea beyond it to look for survivors. But one had to put one's priorities in order --

A snowball whizzed past his head and splatted into a wooden post that supported the roof that covered the small patio before the door.

"Who threw that?" he called out.

Misato's giggle replied and he turned to find that she and the two Children had started a small snowball fight.

"Sorry!" Misato called. "I was trying to aim for Shinji, but he ducked."

"What was I supposed to do? I didn't want to get wet," Shinji said. "This stuff's cold."

"You idiot, you're not supposed to duck," Asuka snapped.

"Yeah, only I can hit the Professor with snow," Sabia called back. Turning, he found she had hopped up onto the logpile, where she wadded up a snowball and lobbed it in the general direction of Misato, who playfully grabbed Shinji and dragged him, protesting, into the line of fire. Splat!

"Hey! That's cold!" Shinji yelled, wriggling free of Misato.

"Missed me!" Misato called out, not noticing Kajii sneaking up behind her with a handful of snow.

"Not for long," Kajii teased and stuffed the handful of snow down the back of her pants.

"Of course it's cold," Asuka snipped at Shinji.

"Ahh, I'm gonna freeze. That's wet!" Misato squawked.

"Hey, get to work, we still have paths to clear," Fuyutsuki barked, trying to sound annoyed.

"Ooh, being a grumpy old man as usual, Professor?" Misato said. "Perfect target: let's get 'um!" She hurled a snowball in his direction as Asuka and Kajii tossed more snowballs.

Fuyutsuki put the blade of the shovel between his face and the line of fire. "Just try and hit me," he growled. One snowball missed his head by inches, while another splatted into the shovel.

"No fair!" Asuka yelled, pointing with her good arm.

"Well, that's a clever use of the shovel," Kajii said.

"But I only have one hand to throw with, unless Shinji holds the shovel," she said.

"Who, me?" Shinji said, clueless.

"Of course! You're only being a dead weight," Asuka snarled.

"I told you, only I can throw snow on him," Sabia snarled, hurling two snowballs at once.

"Dual-wielding snowball throwing," Kajii observed. "Impressive technique. That evens the odds, but we'll need a better strategy."

Fuyutsuki dug the blade of the shovel into the snow and levered a chunk of it toward the four troublemakers. "You'll need all the strategy at your disposal," he called out, grinning.

"Shinji, you roll the snowballs; the three of us will throw them," Asuka said.

"Ooh, very good idea, Asuka," Misato said.

"Of course! I always came up with the best strategy when circumstances on the battlefield forced a change," Asuka said, preening.

"And just as snooty about it as ever," Shinji muttered, setting to work rolling snowballs.

"Our odds just got worse," Fuyutsuki murmured to Sabia. "The enemy is organizing."

"Shall I spread my AT Field?" she asked.

"That would be fighting dirty," he said.

"Let's switch off," Sabia said. "You shield yourself while I throw, then when I have to reload, you catapult snow at them."

"Aim for the munitions factory," he said.

She stared at him. "I can't hit Shinji."

He smirked at her. "All's fair in love and war."

A volley of snowballs fell over them, one hitting Sabia in the neck. "Grr, that was close," she muttered and hurled two snowballs, one toward Shinji, the other at Asuka.

"Missed me!" Asuka yelled as the snowball blew past her head.

The second hit Shinji in the stomach. "Oof!" he cried. "Hey, watch it with those!" He grabbed a snowball from the pile and hurled it at Sabia.

At that moment, Gendo emerged from the kitchen, his jacket draped over his shoulders, it's folds concealing his injured arm. Shinji's snowball blew right past Sabia and arced toward Gendo, splatting him in the face.

"Oops," Sabia murmured.

"Uh, hi there, Commander -- er, Gendo-sama," Misato said, grinning nervously.

Gendo calmly wiped the snow from his face with his one good hand. "I thought you were clearing the walks," he said. "You seem to have gotten a little side-tracked."

"Come now, Gendo, no need to be sour," Kajii said. "We haven't had a snowstorm worthy being called by that term in fifteen years, much less one that dropped enough snow to warrant a snowball fight. We need a moment to relax."

"Especially the children," Fuyutsuki said. "Your son just got to experience his first snowball fight today -- Mmf!" Sabia had gotten her hands on a large chunk of snow which she smushed over his head.

"Division in the enemy ranks! Victory is ours!" Asuka cried.

Fuyutsuki turned and pinned Sabia to the top of the logpile. "You did that to defuse the situation," he murmured in her ear.

She smiled up at him. "Anything to keep His Highness from being a complete wet blanket," she said and leaned up to kiss him.

Hee, thanks! It was crazy to write (I think I first got the idea, with the image of Misato chucking a snowball at Fuyutsuki), but I had a blast and considering all that these folks have been through, they all deserved a chance to kick back and just be a family having fun (even if Gendo was his usual party-pooper self; there are some things even Instrumentality can't change :: laughs::).
