^--Probably a horrible translation of "Japanese for Dummies", the title of one of the books I picked up at the Burlington Barnes & Noble: I decided it was time I stopped fooling around and bought that as well as a Japanese/English dictionary. To my amusement, I've worked out rough possible translation for the name of a certain devious gentleman of taste, and discovered that one meaning of it could be "peaceful hawk", which only half suits him.

Also got yet another bargain journal (with a different cherry blossom print than previous one) and the second book in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire", since I'm in "Gaaah, can't put this down" mode reading the first one. Despite the fact that GRRM seems to have trouble writing teenaged girls that don't flirt with the edges of Mary Sue territory (but then again... most Mary Sues are the Author Avatars of a lot of teenaged girls); I'm of a mind to reach in and push Sansa into a convenient puddle of mud, though I like Arya's spunk (despite the fact that she sometimes veers toward being the cliche tomboyish princess/young noblewoman).

Also finished another Fanfic Rose, which I hope to get typed later tonight and posted sometime tomorrow, as I've got one ready to go at my usual fic-release time (ie. just after midnight)

The amount of dislike I feel for Sansa is quite high - despite the fact that most fans I spoke to are positive that liking her is possible (and she has a cult following) after the second book.

Me personally? Still can't stand her halfway through Storm of Swords. It's a bit of a taboo in fandom, though, not liking Sansa. Erngh.

Yeah, she reminds me of this one spoiled rotten little girl who used to bedevil me at a morning arts and crafts program that I used to go to when I was a kid. We didn't have a lot of money when I was younger, and I often wore obvious hand-me-downs from relatives, so this little poopsie would poke fun at me for it; or she'd call me the ever popular "four eyes" because of my eyeglasses. I sometimes wonder what happened to her: she's probably someone's ex-wife from hell, unless she got over herself.

That's... pretty much how I feel about her as well. When you get further in your reading, I'll be interested to compare notes.

Where are you at so far?

Hmmm.... I actually just finished reading the bit where Sandor Clegane tells Sansa how his face got burned ...and then he threatens to kill her if she tells anyone. I went through a moment of "Go right ahead and spill the beans, little girl, get yourself killed", but then my "Nobody hurts kids or threatens to hurt kids. Not. On. My. Watch." clause kicked into action and I started imagining creative, multi-fandom crossover nasty things to have happen to Sandor: ie. gets gang-seduced and eaten by White Court vampires (from the Dresden Files); finds out that his opponent in the hand-to-hand portion of the tourney is Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach (there would be hysterical cosmic justice in having Sandor meet his demise at the hands of a scary-looking seven-foot Japanese death god who wields a four-foot long samurai sword and is often seen with a pink-haired seven year old girl riding around on his shoulders); a portal opens, Auphes pop out and drag him into their world to play with him, etc.

Hahaha yes. Sandor is an interesting fellow - more so in the next books. I like him, but that's because the characterization I'm used to in RP is very particular and endearing. In fact, I like him better in fanon than canon, er.

:: Laughs gently:: Yeah, I've sometimes found some fanon as interesting or even more interesting than some things in the canon of a series. Case in point: my fondness for alternate continuity fics in the "A.I." universe; during the heyday of the fanfic group on Yahoo, one of my characters even ended up becoming almost a fanonic character.

Agreed! The same goes for all the Silmarillion characters I love - it's how they've been fleshed out by ficcers that made me love them. Let's face it, the Professor didn't give us much as far as characterization is concerned.

I had to look it up myself, to make sure.

"Japanese (Language)'s Fool."

Clearly, that "D" grade on the Intro to Japanese class I took all those years ago is showing.
