He was only a kid during the early years of the war, and he really didn't have much choice in the matter: if you were a kid (of German ancestry, that is) living in Germany at the time, it was mandatory that you joined the Hitler Youth, or else you and your family would have been regarded as traitors to the Reich, and you risked being sent to a labor camp or worse. Later on, Ratzinger was forced to leave college and enter the German army... *but*, he deserted the army and let the Allies capture him.
