"This is the only country in the world," said Wednesday, into the stillness, "that worries about what it is."

"What?" [asked Shadow]

"The rest of them know what they are. No one ever needs to go searching for the heart of Norway. Or looks for the soul of Mozambique. They know what they are."

"And...?"

"Just thinking out loud."

Just up from finishing up washing the dishes after watching the Fourth of July concert from Boston. Rather quiet Fourth, as my dad had to work today, thus we'll be having our indoor cookout tomorrow evening -- Yes, I know, contradictory name is contradictory: we have so many BUUUUGGGS in our yard that we rarely have a cookout before October and our Hallow-Weiner Roast at Hallowe'en. Dad and I watched our town's fireworks last night (would have gone to the ones in Wilmington, as it's a better show, but it turned out they'd scheduled them for last night, which is weirdly early for them).

Have been watching "Dexter" on DVD (from the library) and enjoying every minute of it. I think if I do end up redeeming a certain pale fellow, he may end up somewhat like a certain blood-spatter expert, in terms of temperament.

Also found a small and sadly defunct Gormenghast fanfiction community: [livejournal.com profile] thestonelanes; there's a nice number of fics on there, which I'm working through slowly. I know there's a section on ff.n for Gormenghast fics, but since the incident of the virus attack in April, nothing can possess me to go back there. Especially not with this new laptop. I might sneak on via one of the comps at the library, but not from my own (mean of me, but it's a matter of principle).

I missed the bicentennial by about six months, but at least I was conceived during the bicentennial; makes it easy to calculate how old the U. S. of A is.

Happy Birthday, U.S. of A.! And to everyone who lives here, have a blast celebrating your freedom and independence! Enjoy your parades and cookouts and fireworks shows! My plans include watching the Boston Pops concert and helping my dad roast hot dogs over an open fire (I doubt we'll be able to eat out this year, due to all the raaaain we had making everything moist, and the mosquitoes which like to congregate in our yard).

Wednesday and Shadow, American Gods, Neil Gaiman

And if someone could clue me in on the chapter where someone, I think Wednesday, describes the U.S as a cluster of little countries all united by McDonald's and chain stores, I'll be in your debt.

EDITED TO ADD: Found it!

"It's almost hard to believe [San Francisco] is in the same country as Lakeside."

Wednesday glared at him. Then he said, "It's not. San Francisco isn't in the same country any more than New Orleans is in the same country as New York or Miami is in the same country as Minneapolis."

"Is that so?" Shadow asked mildly.

"Indeed it is. They may share certain cultural signifiers -- money, a federal government, entertainment -- but the only things that give it the illusion of being one country are the greenback, 'The Tonight Show' and McDonalds."

For the first time in years, the mosquitoes actually allowed us to have a cook out *outside*: most years, they chase us back into the house and the most we can accomplish is that my dad manages to roast our turkey dogs over his cleverly devised fire pit, made from scrap metal he got at a friend's scrapyard.

And, unfortunately for us, the rumors that our town had decided not to have any fireworks this year have proven true. Ah well. At least we had the fireworks in Boston on television, but that's sure not the same as seeing them live.

In other news: I've started to keep a kind of journal of book, movie and CD reviews by way of Amazon.com's user reviews. I've added a link to my Amazon user page to the links on the main page of this LJ

And it *is* a happy 4th, despite the fact that I had to go in to work today, aka. bagging everyone's barbacque fixings.

--A dear little friend's mum came through some difficult surgery: I'd been praying and offering up my sufferings for her sake, and it's a relief that she's doing better.

--Went to the band concert and fireworks in Wilmington with my folks the other night.

--Had a good night on EvE last night: otherwise known as Sieges killing rocks with her shiny new mining barge.

--Being lucky to live in a free country... even if I have to put up with the fact that it ranked third in survey done on what is the whiniest country out there.
