matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Hellsing vs Twilight)

...While watching the Twhinelite movie, via YouTube. I couldn't get past the first five minutes. The washed-out look might work for Supernatural, but on this it looks like the film negatives got rinsed a couple times too many when it was being developed. And Kristin Stewart's narration... could her voice be any more flat?!

I finally gave up, dug up my DVDs of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and watched that with the commentary track: Francis Ford Coppola has some interesting stories to tell about the making of that film (the supreme moment of awkward when he and two other guys on the film crew had to tell the girls playing Dracula's brides to remove some of their clothes; his empathy for the little kid whom Lucy was about to gnaw on, as well as the newborn baby that Drac offers to his brides, and how he wants to get in touch with them now that they're grown up and sort of apologize for the weird movie-making stuff these kids got put through). I'd forgotten how weird and surreal and beautiful this version is, though what stayed with me was how closely it follows the book.

Neil and I watched both of the ones out on DVD and available from Netflix. We knew they were going to be several kinds of awful so we watched with a mind to snark, where appropriate, a la MST3K. Trouble is, we were stopping the show every 3 minutes, in some places, because it was that bad.

Bella is a Sue. Ed-weird is a Stu. So's the werewolf. Most of the other characters are cardboard cut-outs. Gah........

Oddly enough, I found the supporting characters more interesting when I was reading the books: I keep saying that Jasper and Alice deserve a series of their own to get them away from Dulla and Edweird, but I shudder to think what their author would do to them. And some of us in the LJ RPG I've been playing are hoping that we get an Edward... Mostly because we have a Jonathan Harker-like professor who studies vampirism (Paul, from Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian") and because the resident energy vampire thinks he might be tasty, like a glazed fruit...

I tried the book, got 50 pages into it and decided that Bella was the most boring Mary Sue I'd read in years and put it back on the library shelf. The only decent thing that's come out of Twilight is Buffy Vs Edward.

That video cheers me immensely when I've seen too much Twilight fic. Glad you liked it!

Whoa... the editing on that is just about seamless! If they'd somehow been able to use a color filter on the Buffy clips so it matched the Twhinelite clips, it would be perfect, but that's a minor carp compared to how awesome it is!

The creator did it that way on purpose- if you open the information bar below there's lots of info about how and why it was made, including a bit on the color difference:

It was actually a style choice to leave the color (mostly) the same as the original source footage (except for making the Twilight forest shots a little darker). I wanted the viewer to always be reminded that this is a visual critique of two very different narratives. The different colors help pull the you back out of the story for a moment so you can think about the messages in the juxtaposition as you watch (Naomi articulated this to me beautifully). I didn’t want to hide the fact that it was a remix; remix is often about exposing the illusion of film and television, not reproducing it. Plus I thought it was also helpful for those who haven’t seen the movie or the show to know that the blue tinted shots are from Twilight and the orange tinted ones are from Buffy.

Why I managed to survive watching Twilight on YouTube: Because I wanted to be able to bash it properly.

How I managed to survive it: By watching and doing 30984309843098 other things at the same time. >.>

So, yeah. Hm. I FEEL YOUR PAIN. *goes to ogle real vampires who don't look like they're smeared in margarine*

ALSO. THIS MIGHT MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER:

:: ROFL!!::

Anything from a Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaboration can make me feel better (started watching "Sleepy Hollow" recently and dare I say, I *LOVE* their Alternate Character Interpretation of Ichabod Crane, even better than the original...)

I want a t-shirt. "I made it through Twilight the movie."

I didn't LIKE it, mind you, but I DID it.

My hat, which happens to be a fedora, goes off to you and to anyone else who braved that thing. I'd rather watch "Daybreakers" any day night. :: Laughs::

Yes, I support Team Edward... Dalton, that is.
