matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Jane Austen in Hollywood)
Okay, the spammers are getting really irritating. I've gotten multiple spam comments to this one dump of [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic entries, so I've had to enable the CAPTCHA on anonymous comments. I have non-friends who comment from other communities that I cross post from and sometimes the odd person from InsaneJournal, so I don't want to shut them out by disabling anon commenting completely.

In more pleasant news, had a father-daughter trip to the Used Book Superstore last night: I found a clever little novel entitled "Letters to a Heroine", based on the premise that Jane Austen is writing an advice column; also found Ovid's "The Art of Love", Marie de France's "Lais", an interesting-looking young adult novel entitled "Parsifal's Page" (based on Wolfram von Eschenbach's "Parzival"), and most fascinating of all, Liza Dalby's "Geisha", based on the work of an American anthropologist who is the only non-Japanese woman ever to train as and become a geisha. I'd been looking for this one for years without much luck, thus as soon as I spotted it, I snatched it up.

GRRAAAH! OMG! LJ sux im gong 2 DREEMWIDTH!111111 ::flounce-bounce-pout::

./snark off :: Laughs:: Kidding, kidding (hey, if I wasn't being snarky and mischievous in the face of a maddening situation, it would be a Very Bad Sign). I've been talking about this for some time, and [profile] cluelesspsycho had given me a code (just days before the recent spate of drama went down, oddly enough). I may start crossposting from here to LJ: we'll see how it turns out. Right now, I'm just exploring the place. We'll see how it goes.

1. The Dean Winchester Rule of the Road

"Driver picks the tunes; shotgun shuts their cakehole." -- Dean Winchester, "Supernatural", Episode 1.01

This is my corner of the Internet, or at least the corner I'm renting from LiveJournal, thus, people watching it/visiting it are riding shotgun with me down the Information Superhighway. I may pick some tunes that may not necessarily be liked by all, but which I hope are in good taste. I may even do things that are the equivalent singing along with experimental music. Deliberate offense is never intended, so if the singing along with experimental music is getting on your nerves, wait a little while since I'll come to the end of the song momentarily.

2. The Bill & Ted Principle of Social Harmony

"Be excellent to one another." -- Bill & Ted, "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure"

What It Says On The Tin. Treat each other with respect and civility. That includes other posters commenting as well as me. I'm tempted to insist on Jane Austen levels of civility, up to and including talking like one wandered out of "Pride and Prejudice" (or even Pride & Prejudice & Zombies), but that would unrealistic (even I have trouble replicating the speech patterns in a Jane Austen novel, and if I can't pull it off, I don't expect other people to. If you feel up to it, don't hesitate to try it.). If you're going to shoot back an angry comment to something, I insist that before doing so, that you pause, take a few deep breaths, get yourself a cool drink, do some exercises of your choice and above all *THINK* about what you're going to post.

Remember this xkcd comic?

Lotta truth in that one little frame....

Or to quote my "most righteous" friend [livejournal.com profile] anivad

Don't pick arguments unnecessarily. There will always be people who disagree with you, and arguing on the Internet is like running in the Special Olympics; even if you win, you're still a retard. This statement is offensively ablist, but pointing that out and fighting it is a perfect example of what not to do unless it matters in that particular situation, because that way lies nothing but angst you could do without. The world is majorly screwed up if you scrutinise it for too long. It's filled with sexism, racism, homophobia, ablism, and many other things like that. It is not a good idea to note every single instance of it. That way lies nothing but angst. Some degree of living in oblivious denial is sometimes necessary to survive and be happy. The alternative is likely to get you nowhere, and you'll just wallow in angst and be depressed about how everything sucks and it's not going to change any time soon.

I've been somewhat AWOL from this journal, and for decidedly personal reasons. I'm going to express them here, but first, I feel the need to post a bit of a disclaimer.

The views expressed herein are extremely personal, and of a very sensitive nature, since they are expressed by a very sensitive person. People are free to disagree with them; I only ask for a certain level of respect and politeness toward them. If you feel the need to comment on something therein which displeases you, please stop for a moment and think about what you are planning to say. Please step away from the keyboard, if necessary, and get yourself a glass of iced tea or chocolate milk or your beverage of choice to refresh yourself. One thing that is not allowed here on this LiveJournal, are keyboard smash disagreements. It makes the poster look like an angry gorilla, and it makes me feel like a bad person for upsetting the poster and I start to question if I belong in this world.

Okay, that said...

matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Diary)
To the tune of removing some comms and defunct journals from my flist. I was sad to see one person delete their LJ, but I enjoyed being their friend in the time that they spent on here. Also removed a few comms that were just plain getting too wanky. If I see one more wankrant on FFrants about metaphors and description, it will be all I can do to keep from drubbing that poster with the omnibus of Gormenghast. People use metaphors and a lot of description. Live with it. For some people, that's just their style; it may not make them Mervyn Peake (and one could argue that his densely descriptive style goes a long way to helping establish the static, ponderous quality of the castle of Gormenghast), but it's How They Write. Some could likely learn to pare things down just a bit (I'm looking at *YOU*, Stephanie Meyer...), but there are those of us who don't mind reading a lot of description.

I'm also debating removing some of the whiny older entries from my own journal, and I have to admit, a lot of the earlier entries are little more than a page of wank. The problem is... I'd likely end up cutting into the lovely 2,000+ number of entries I have on here and I'm not sure as if I want to do that.

Though given the number of fics I've posted on [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, I'd likely rebalance the number of removed entries fairly soon. I've... been working on one or two SPN fics in a bid to try and give back, in the hope that someone will fill some of my YnM prompts. I have more fic ideas than I really have time to write them.
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Alucard)
Now to finish reorganizing the "writing" tag, though I'm taking a break, since there's about 200 entries to go through.

Started watching Trigun in earnest: gotta love Vash the Stampede, he's like Abel Nightroad's goofy kid brother who stole Alucard's red duster and orange sunglasses, then modded them a little. Also had more Hey, It's That Voice moments: Vash sounding like The Other Shinigami Named Kurosaki (Ichigo, in Bleach, which I need to get back to); Aramaki as yet another Random Old Guy; Meryl sounding suspiciously like Rit-chan from Those Who Hunt Elves, and a cameo of Mistress Celcia's VA from ditto.

One project that I ditched: adding more tropes to the Yami no Matsuei page on TVTropes. I realized there were way too many tropes (particularly eye-related ones) that fit Muraki too well and I got sick of it.

I also came up with a theory on the identity of the mysterious Edward McLeod, who voiced a certain crooked energy vampire: I remembered something from the commentary on the Evangelion DVDs, where Matt Greenfield came forward as the VA for Huyuuga, and described how he'd stepped in, under a stage name to fill the role when the guy they'd contracted just never showed up for the recording sessions. I wonder if something similar happened when they were dubbing YnM, only in this case, the VA who was supposed to voice Muraki ditched the role after he read through all the scripts, probably thinking to himself, "I can't voice this character, he's an evil [expletive][deleted] in every sense of the words!"

Also banging away on the last full chapter of the Twhinelite crossover: I'd started to write one bit that hinted that something might be going on between Tatsumi and Mercy while the boys were out chasing vampires and whiny girls, but then I remembered that Mercy had been out looking for Bella, though I suppose it's logical she could have gone back to the crummy hotel after she found Bella had gone missing from the hospital. Still, it was fun to imagine the boys' suspicions when one of them notices that the buttons of a certain meticulous fellow's vest are somehow buttoned crookedly...
