matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (LJ)

As of tonight, 6 pm EST (Midnight GMT, I will *NOT* be posting anything to this journal for twenty-four hours -- not a post, not a voice post, not a comment -- in protest against the recent changes in LJ policy, including:

--Disallowing new Basic (free, ad-free) accounts

--Censoring certain hot-button-topic interests

--Creating the lovely "Beacon" spyware that scans your interests and your posts to see that there isn't any hot-button stuff in them as well as following you around the 'Net to make sure you don't log onto any hot-button sites.

The last one is the deal-breaker for me.

I hope to God this gets us the results we need. Join me, folks: we have to show the wonks running this site what *really* makes this site a success.

Yeah, I mean, I heard LJ had "apologized" somewhat, but I still say we should go through with the strike!

All those things--basic accounts, censoring interests , and "spying" on their (often loyal) users--what kind of a site is this?

P.S.
Any thoughts about having some kind of "rallying chat" off LJ for this?

The InsaneJournal community

was created to help support people during the LiveJournal content strike. Hope to see you all there.

Me too (actually, I'm wondering if they're actually breaking the law with that one.)

I have to wonder though, would a meer 24 hours be effective? I mean, not everyone posts every day and I doubt that everyone on LJ will take part in the strike, so it might not be a big enough kick in the rear for those in charge. Maybe something more like a week would be more effective. *shrugs* *goes off to spread the word*

Apparently there are other reasons behind this too:

Maybe I'm just not digging deep enough, but I can't find Beacon and Livejournal mentioned in the same sentence anywhere on the Internets. if true, it's scary, but what's the source for that? I haven't been following any of the drama very closely, so I think I've missed some important stuff. I've looked at all the boycott links I can find, and nobody seems to have a reliable source for the belief that Livejournal is spying on us.

What I did find out about Beacon is that Facebook's been using it for a while (to "send stories to your profile"), so LJ didn't "create" it. Still not sure of its connection with LJ, though.
