matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (LJBlackout)
Just got an email reply to my feedback left last night:

Below is an answer to your support question regarding "Re: Requiring gender identification"

======================================================================

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. We understand that gender is not binary, and intend to respect that understanding for our users.

At this time, the code you reference is not live on the site, and will not become so in the future. We know that you, and many other users, have serious concerns about any requirement to specify gender, so we'd like to take a moment to explain events and our position further.

The intention of this code was to change the sign-up process to include a field for the selection of gender; that the code would completely disable the "Unspecified" option at the same time was deemed unacceptable. While the code in question had gone to our beta (testing) server, it had not gone to our production server, and will not do so due to this problem. Furthermore, we'd like to clarify that code posted to the changelog community is not always final, as such code must then go through the beta testing process and can often be changed before actual implementation.

Additionally, some erroneous information has been spread regarding the potential public display of the gender field. We would like to clarify that gender is not currently publicly displayed on the profile, nor anywhere else on the site, and there are no plans to change this behavior.

Regards,
LiveJournal Community Care Team

So it seems LiveJournal wants to oblige everyone creating new accounts to specify their gender. One thing I really don't like doing is giving out my gender online, and I know people have different reasons for not specifying their gender, some of them very personal. Let's hope some feedback can get them to reverse this change I know people who are prepared to leave LJ on account of this, and I really don't want to have to chase all over the Internet trying to keep in touch with them.

EDITED TO ADD: It seems they're also removing the "unspecified" option. This does not bode well at all...

Turned out better than we'd feared

As you might know, I recently joined a new community called [livejournal.com profile] ljunited that's dedicated to working towards defending and restoring the original promises made to LiveJournal's members, standing up for free speech on LJ, and restoring community participation in the operations of LiveJournal. It's our goal to work together over the long term to build a diverse movement of people with the power to influence the decisions of LJ's management to prevent the kind of problems we have seen so many of LJ's members face over the past few years.
LJUnited overwhelmingly endorsed [livejournal.com profile] rm , a really great candidate, as their choice for the LJ Advisory Board elections, and she's doing very well, but needs your help. I hope you'll consider voting now and making her either your candidate of choice, or your second choice.

Please take a few seconds to vote, and thanks!

All right... two abortive voice posts in a row: there must be something up with the Voice post feature, or everyone is doing voice posts at once. I'll try to post one later tonight when things calm down.

As of tonight, 6 pm EST (Midnight GMT, I will *NOT* be posting anything to this journal for twenty-four hours -- not a post, not a voice post, not a comment -- in protest against the recent changes in LJ policy, including:

--Disallowing new Basic (free, ad-free) accounts

--Censoring certain hot-button-topic interests

--Creating the lovely "Beacon" spyware that scans your interests and your posts to see that there isn't any hot-button stuff in them as well as following you around the 'Net to make sure you don't log onto any hot-button sites.

The last one is the deal-breaker for me.

I hope to God this gets us the results we need. Join me, folks: we have to show the wonks running this site what *really* makes this site a success.

I know I begged you folks to not leave LJ because it left me feeling abandoned, but now that I hear the Marxists in charge of this dump are going to weigh the site down with what amounts to spyware, and since I had a computer destroyed by the stuff, I'm not taking any chances. I'll take part in the protest being staged on Friday, but if it doesn't get the results we need, that is the end of the line for me. I have a great, stable machine in my present comp -- it might be a PC, but it has the heart of a Mac -- and I am not taking any chances with it. I might just unplug entirely and just keep a paper journal from now on, if it comes to that. Maybe I'll photocopy pages from it and stick it in public places guerrilla-art style, just to remind the human race that I exist...

EDITED TO ADD: I recently created my own "death note"-notebook as a stress reliever in dealing with horrible people. I'm making liberal use of it as of now...
