"Daybreakers" fanfic/fandom rant

immortalmiracle, the main "Daybreakers"-specific comm, has asked if there is any Frankie/Allison fic out there? This made me cringe a bit since that pair doesn't get a whole lot of screentime together, except for the bit where Frankie forcibly turns Allison and the turning is played pretty much like a rape, or at least in terms of the dynamics involved to whit, he grabs her and pins her to a wall, yanking her head to one side by the hair before chomping on her jugular vein: it's painful to watch, and while "your kink is not my kink", it reminded me of things I'd rather not think about and which are *NOT* sexy or attractive. I don't see Frankie as being really much of a romantic: he even admits at one point that he "never was really good at being human", meaning he was a jerk before his turning and an even bigger jerk as a vampire.
One thing I liked a lot about "Daybreakers" is that it stepped back from the "vampires r SECKS GAWDZ!1111" trope/cliche. There isn't a whole lot in the movie that can be passed off as overtly sexual, unless one gets Freudian (or slash-cesty: the bulk of the fanfic I've seen has been comprised, distressingly to me, of Frankie/Edward [Dalton] slash). The closest we get to a romantic moment in the movie is after Edward is cured and he looks at Audrey as if he wants to kiss her in gratitude, but doesn't. These vampires are in survival mode: feeding on blood for them is like us drinking coffee or eating a sandwich. There's one bit when the blood rationing goes into effect where a vampire mom worries about how she's going to feed her kids. When you're wondering where and when your next meal is going to come from, you tend not to think much about your libido. The bits where the vampires go into bloodlust-mode are about as sexy as hyenas in the Serengeti tearing into an injured zebra (I found them gruesome and even a bit funny: the overhead shot when the crowd of vampire soldiers tears into the Sam Neill character and his head comes flying toward the viewer always gets a nervous snigger out of me, mostly because it reminds me of some gruesome fun I had with someone throwing a vampire head in a fanfic WIP of mine....).

Date: 2010-02-08 12:28 pm (UTC)I was hoping Frankie would go back with Edward, Elvis and Audrey ands save her, and get him to apologize for doing what he did...maybe being redeemed in another way than seeing Allison die.
I saw potential in them, maybe not being a couple straight away, maybe just having some more scenes and chemistry together.
I would love to write something..:) just have to get some ideas i guess. :)
