I'm not going to link it up for reasons that will become clear in a moment. ( Cut for references to really sick content with possible triggers for some readers )
This actually has me mad enough to write a response of sorts to it. I've been watching "Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex" and I'm now tempted to write a story involving Section 9 breaking a child bot-prostitution ring. That might be a bit out of their jurisdiction, but I have a feeling Dr. Allen Hobby (yes, I'm thinking "crossover") wouldn't be thrilled to find out some people are doing horrible things with his creation, and he might have connections. Who knows what kind of strings Aramaki might be able to pull... Plus, I want an excuse for writing a scene where the Major is almost tenderly carrying a troubled little bot to safety, and a bit with Batou beating the prosthetics out of some perv. No doubt this would be a hard case for Togusa to handle since he's got kids of his own, but it might be the sort of thing that cures him of that tiny bit of speciesism that he seems to have towards AIs.

NGE fanart madness: An Evangelion Sue
Nov. 27th, 2008 06:20 pmThe klaxon going off is not an Angel attack warning, it is my Sue-dar going off
http://tifavii.deviantart.com/art/Yuki-Takanashi-Eva-07-pilot-90945048
Nicely drawn, but... the artist's caption is worrisome:
She's Yuki Takanashi, Eva07 pilot, the 8th child from Neon Genesis Evangelion. As you can see this character was invented by me, she's not 14 as the other pilots (in the first sketch, left, she was 14) , she's 16 (the others sketches) cuz she lived where the 2nd Impact (she was 2) and everyone died, well not everyone, she didn't die, she was in coma for 12 years, then she woke up and two years later she returned to Nerv as an Eva pilot. She's intimately related with Gendoh Ikari and his wife, Yui. She's very interested in Shinji cuz she said that it was his name the last thing she heard when she fall into the coma. She maintains a relationship of friendship and rivalry with Kaworu.
Eva07? There are count 'em five manned Eva units, beyond that are the Mass Production Units, and those are the ones with the dummy plug system. Unless she was piloting one of the harpy-like things in End of Evangelion. I guess the artist must not have seen EoE or dismissed it. I admit to liking both endings myself, but I consider the end of the TV series to be an Elseworld of sorts...

Make that Godawful Fan Art (or GAFA), actually...
Remind me to be very discerning when I go rooting for Neon Genesis Evangelion fanart. There seem to be a few people who insist on pairing -- of all characters -- Gendo Ikari and Kouzou Fuyutski. Err... isn't Fuyutski about ten to fifteen years older than Gendo, and he's also the latter's 2IC? Plus I get the impression that the Vice-Commander of NERV almost defines "married to his work", in whatever capacity he's in (professor of "metaphysical biology", unlicensed physician working for the UN in treating the survivors of Second Impact, vice-commander of NERV), while the former is still carrying a torch for his "dead" wife? (Also, Fuyutski had a thing for Yui as well...) Plus, while I think Fuyutski is a hottie in a Vincent Price-clone sort of way... I don't see him as very slashable.
This is a case of the not-so-bad-but-mildly-"bzuh?!"-inducing: http://www.evacommentary.org/images_fanart/mark_gendo,kozo_futari.jpg
And the "Yaggh! Burn it with fire!": http://www.evacommentary.org/images_fanart/apocrypha_gendo,kozo.gif (Click at your own risk! You have been warned! Brain bleach will be provided: http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j20/javelin98/th_brain_bleach.jpg)

"Shark" badfic. Ow
Jul. 23rd, 2008 05:33 pmAnd it's not even on the Pit of Voles, aka fanfiction.net, either.
I've been scrimmaging around, looking for "Shark" fanfics (recently got my hands on a gently used copy of the Season 1 box set), and I haven't found a whole lot, at least not on ff.n. Seems a lot of people are taking their fanfics to LJ and other journal sites (I don't blame them), plus I found a small archive of just "Shark" fanfics...
And there's a whole, thankfully small section for "slash". Gaaagh... At least James Woods's character is spared the indignity -- that and seeing Stark slashed with anyone is aneurysm-inducingly horrible; plus seeing any James Woods slash would be like seeing my crazy friend Mark slashed, since he looks like he ought to be JW's kid brother. But we have to endure Jessica Devlin/Madelaine Poe femslash. I don't see the pairing at all; please to be keeping your private fantasies where they belong: in private.
Or worse: Madelaine/Julie Stark slash. I think Sebastian would probably slash (in a completely different order) anyone, male or female, who laid a dishonorable hand on his daughter (wonder if that's how her loser-drunk boyfriend disappeared from the series, aside from him being swallowed up by the writers' strike...). Especially since she's underage, though I'm hazy about the age of consent laws in California. Hell, would Sebastian really care about age of consent laws, if his daughter was involved (or anyone's daughter, since underneath his narcissicism, there really is a moral side to him...)? He'd find a way to make the "indecent congress with a minor" charges stick even if he had to use spit and/or used chewing gum.
I'm staying away from the "romance" section: probably wall-to-wall Stark/Devlin smut, anyway, and while I think James Woods is hot, despite being an older guy... I don't want to think about anything beyond a PG-13 rating involving him.
This is what I get for testing the waters to see how much of an audience there is for "Shark" fanfics...

Matrix Refugee and the crossover of peril
Mar. 31st, 2008 10:58 pmOkay... getting my hands on a copy of Small Favor, aka TDF 10, will be happening in hopefully less than twelve hours. I might even take an early bus to get to Burlington to pick up my pre-order. So, I'm tiding myself over by re-rereading the books and short stories. I'm halfway through White Night and I doubt I'll finish it by tomorrow, so I might re-reread the short stories before I go to bed... So, I thought I'd look around for some (sssshhh! Don't tell Jim Butcher's rules-lawyers) fanfiction.
Maybe there's a reason they're not too keen on fanfiction. Maybe, unwittingly, they're trying to protect us from badfic.
For chuckles, I went on ff.n, aka the Pit of Voles, to see what I could see. I should have heeded the warning of a young new poster on the Jim Butcher forums.
I offer this for your perusal:

Yes, it's a Harry Potter crossover. Mind you, I think it *could* work, but it would take a lot of dancing around to rectify the vast differences between the two universes. For starters: the magic doesn't even work the same way. Jim Butcher pretty much based the Dresden-verse magic on the laws of physics and made it plausible, plus he used a lot of concepts from actual magic as it's practised. It's the sort of stuff you could almost see happening, he's presented it so credibly. J.K. Rowlings pretty much used random ideas, though she *did* borrow concepts from mythology and folklore for her critters. Plus, HP wizards practically live in the Never-Never, while most TDF wizards live in a world not much unlike ours, aside from the odd occurrances that happen under the regular folks' noses.
Aside from that...
Grammar is wonky. So is spelling, up to and including character names (Who's this "Karen Murphy" that's working with Harry. Commas appear only randomly. Characterization of the non-original characters is a bit off, though Harry Dresden has a few lines that are almost Jim Butcher-worthy ("I don’t think it was Publishers Clearing House here with a check" -- that made me giggle). And let's not get started on Katrina "Kat" James; thankfully, she doesn't hog the limelight (much), and we aren't saddled with a lengthy and urplish description of her looks, but there is something about her that twigs my Mary Sue-dar. Oh, and when talking about Mab and Maeve (man, she correctly spelled the one I thought the fankiddies would mangle...), just what are the "Saide"? I thought they were the Sidhe?
It's not GAFF-worthy, and the author *is* only sixteen, plus I think she's only just exploring the Dresden-verse, so I'm trying not to be hard on her.

Edited for numerous technical glitches. Since GAFF has lost it's sparkle and I don't dare bring this to
fanficrants, I'm going to be posting anything GAFF-like here in my personal LJ.
