Heh-heh-heh-heh...

I came out of my self-imposed sabbatical from the MxO just to see if Kabell, one of the co-founders of the Devil's Advocates and Sieges's adoptive father, had jacked in since my little girl needed a father-daughter talk. Well, they never got the chance to talk, but they *did* end up raiding Zero-One Archive together, which got Sieges's mind off her worries for a bit.

A little background: "Diabolique" (Not her real name), the god-moding Mary Sue vampire-player, came back to the game and is trying to rampage again. Problem is, her antics pissed off a *LOT* of people, so now we've all got the eagle eye on her. She came crawling to Anubis and I with a big plan to take over the Matrix, take down the Merv, and make herself queen of "the new Matrix". The two of us -- maybe make that four of us, if you count Marrith and Morraeon -- basically snarked her down. In the end, Anubis gave Sieges permission to tear into Diabolique, getting revenge for the times that Diabolique has tried to mistake Sieges for a snack bar. I'm amazed that at lvl 49, I managed to get Diabolique down by a third of her health.

Now I have to put up with Sieges/Morraeon chanting "Reapers rule! Vampires drool!" in my headspace...

In other news, my dad is currently puttering in the yard, drilling holes in plastic jack o'lanterns and putting fancy-schmancy blinking Christmas lights in them.

One year ago yesterday, the MxO went live (though I didn't get my hands on a copy of the strategy guide or the software until nearly a month later, and we all know I didn't join up until I got the new comp and set it up. I think it was the very first software bundle I installed once I installed Juno and reconnected to the 'Net). I remember it happened in late March, but I don't recall knowing the exact date until just recently, though I remember feeling a little blue that I wasn't able to join in the fun (and headaches, and gleeful rampaging, and teeth-gnashing, and mission-running, and faction squabbling, and player events, and organization horn-locking, and Exile crushing, and player departures, and crew-member recruiting...) because my comp was a five year old spyware-raddled beater with nowhere the memory or hard-drive capacity needed to run it. The devs have promised that the new combat system will be going live then (and consequently, they had some rather brain-bending yet ridiculously simple instructions on what to do if you're on dial-up and you don't want to get stuck downloading the *HUGE* game patch that's coming out) and they're also promising "a patch of blue sky" for us players as part of an anniversary Live Event. But considering what can happen to you in this universe, after you've glimpsed the sky above the pall of darkness, I'm getting a bad feeling of what lies ahead... On the bright side, I'm hoping this means the Merv organization will cease to be the dartboard for everybody and their brother, at least for a few days. And on that note: to the stoopid Zionite fanboys who ./kiss spam my littie girl at hardlines, back off; not all girls who work for the Merv are sluts, notwithstanding a certain all-girl Merv faction who dress like sluts. I'm looking at *YOU*, members of "The Sirens"; thanks for giving us all a skewed image. Sieges is hoping.... well... ::Considers the email her scatter-brained scattershot is sending to the object of her desires...::

And in a odd turn of events, about one year ago today (based on my notes), Flood showed up in my headspace, though we didn't port him into DegSep until April 1st. Part of the reason I ran that by Laurie was to do something with the snarking, because he was giving me a headache. (Remind me, once I get a scanner, to post the early character design of his "shadow self", which appeared in the strategy guide: I find it amusing. He merely sneers at it.) What's really wierd is how spot-on I was playing him, months and months even before I signed up for the MxO: some of the stuff I figured out about him before hand was creepy (ie. his tendency to be a bit of a discreet ladykiller and his fondness for, er, potent potables, particulary mimosas. What really cooked my noodle was the fact that my favorite drink happens to be a [non-alcoholic] mimosa, too.). It remains to be seen if he's canonically supposed to be British or not (though three fans of the character -- yes, they do exist: they're as rare as 1913 U.S. postage stamps with upside down airplanes on them, but they exist -- figured he's Brit. One of these rare finds, the much-lamented [livejournal.com profile] __flood, was British himself, and I figure it takes one to spot one; he even said "Flood's definately a Brit".); if his "shadow self" ever turns up in one of the cinematics and the voice-actor is sporting a British accent, I will probably yell from the utter shock. We're still not sure about what's up with the gloves, though... time may tell. As I know him, he's since become a constant headspace companion, an unwitting internal therapist (his snarky and scathing commentary on things around me/us keeps me laughing and helps me keep things in their proper perspective) and a dearly loved and/or detested member of the DegSep family.

Tedious work day. And I had to nip over to the bank and withdraw some money for the dental appointment I've got tomorrow. I'm dreading it already: what else are they going to find?

Paradigm Shift: Major security breach )

I really could use a copy of that book Thessaly's reading at the end of "The Sandman: The Kindly Ones"; I think the title of it was something like "When Real Things Happen to Imaginary People".
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Merv_power)
Well, today was a bit more hectic, since there's a big storm coming tomorrow and everyone and their brother was restocking their shelves, in case this turns out to be the next Blizzard of 1978. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I get called in earlier than I'm scheduled for tomorrow's shift.

Paradigm Shift: The shirt and the pillow )

Work day... Library Trip... Wierd soulbonding experience... New "Supernatural" episode... whew, where to start?

Work: nothing unusual... Just the usual bad-weather busy-ness.

Paradigm Shift... )

Library Trip: Renewed "The Physics of Superheroes", also got out Luann Rice's "Silver Bells" (which a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie at Christmas was based off) and Miciho Kaku's "Paralell Worlds", a book on quantum universe theory... probably something I probably know well already.

New "Supernatural" Episode: Whoo... a phantom truck... Didn't Stephen King do something like that? Or was it a killer car? Considering that I nearly got clipped by an SUV once, this one was really creepy for me. But good! What I didn't like about it: The Dean/Girl of the Week sex-scene was too damn long and sweaty. And it started in too cliched a way. C'mon, how many shows have a guy and a gal squabble over something and then suddenly start making out?! No wonder the fanpoodles think that any irritation between two characters equals OMG TWU WUB!!111111

This just in: In-game!Flood is off the hook. I just did the last critical mission, and unless the wretched devs decide to pull something out of their ears between now and when the next update patch goes through, which will probably be in a month or so, we're probably safe from more headspace-dweller headaches.

So... it was Thursday night when the rumors started to fly that in-game!Flood was the next casualty for the Canon Cannon; I first found out about it when I had "jacked in" for a meeting on roleplaying in the MxO. It wasn't a bad meeting, until one of the other players in the faction I'm part of came in and announced to the rest of the faction that Flood was going down for bungling (accidently or on purpose, it's hard to tell, since Flood -- either version, theirs or mine -- plays his cards so close to his dove-grey silk vest that you never know if he's got any) a meeting with some of the Merv's contacts. As soon as I heard that, I and my player character, Sieges [which I think is pronounced something like "See-gezz",], were both nearly sick. Of course, Siggie blurted out that she's crushing on Flood, even though she's never actually met him yet. (She's somehow never met him in my headspace either, even though the Snarky Exile is in there almost *constantly*, which is really strange: I seem to have some sort of firewall in there, or maybe in-game stuff actually has some bearing on the dynamics of my headspace dwellers, and this firewall will be unlocked once she does meet him, but I digress...) This nearly torched off a catfight between Siggie and another female player-friend of hers -- nice to know that I'm/we're not the only Flood fan(s) out there -- since this other gal was also crushing on him. I could barely focus on the meeting after that.

I unhooked from the damn game and tuned into Radio Zero-One (I've made it a habit to unhook from the MxO before midnight, my time. I even tried to port it into the game, since there's several ingame radio stations out there... but no such luck. I was planning to share the word with everyone I could get ahold of...), and as the night progressed, our Flood, who as I mentioned elsewhere tends to drink more when he's nervous (I recently found out that in-game!Flood is a bit of a drinker as well... Not the first time that's happened with this fellow: I figured out that he's a bit of a ladykiller long before that I found out that's true of his in-game shadow self. Looks like there may be something going on for real in my noggin). Not just his usual several mimosas over the course of an evening. This guy was clearly trying to get himself smashed out of his head... code... whatever. His reasoning, "Well, if my shadow is ending up dead by virtue of the Canon Cannon, I've every right to have one last gaudy night and end up dead drunk." And yes, he started fronting. It was all I could do to keep myself coherent, thus the drunk typing when I was trying to IM people. I shared some of this with [livejournal.com profile] he_dreams_awake, who managed to help me keep my head up... He even devoted a rant on Radio Zero-One, about the way that Paul "Canon Casualities" Chadwick has annoyed him and annoyed us. And he reminded us all that the Marketing Brothers' stuff has less bearing on what really happened in their/our world than it really seems. That helped us (I and Flood) pull our wits together a little... or at least, it did for Flood, until the bourbon he'd been chugging all evening took full effect and he passed out on the floor of the Houseparty's space in my head.

Next morning, when I awoke, I was still trembling with apprehension, and then, around noon when Flood finally woke up and I felt him moving around in my brain, I realized I was getting ghosts of his collossal hangover. Not fun. If anyone thinks I'm doing this for fun, they've got another thought coming. I didn't sign up to have a drunk or hungover Exile in there. I didn't even sign up to have Flood in there to begin with: he just showed up a day or two after I first discovered him, when I read his character sheet over on the MxO website (I thought he sounded interesting, but since I'm really not keen on sarcastic people, I wasn't really fond of him, just from the character sheet alone. Then I started hearing this snarky, dry-witted Exile with a BBC-esque British accent yarking in my headspace... the rest is history).

I have to admit, we started to resign ourselves to the inevitable: considering Morpheus's assassination back in May, we were bracing ourselves for the worst. And the worst seemed inevitable, since people on the messageboard and ingame have been doing nothing but bad-mouth the Monochromatic Metrosexual. I'd even gotten the wacky idea that if in-game!Flood got offed, I was going to create an alternate character, a male redpill this time, model him after Flood (bleached-blond hair, lightly tanned complexion, lean physique and all... even costume him in similar shades of grey and black, with a replica of The Gloves, which our boy wears all the time), and write up a sheet that suggested the new fellow was Flood's illegitimate son by some human. Not sure if the MxO-verse is ready for Exile-human hybrids, but we've got one in DegSep...

Things hit bottom last night, when one of the mission communiques from in-game!Flood ended with this cryptic line: "This is it. I'm finished. [...] I'm taking you down with me if it's the last thing I do!" People on the message board figured this meant the Snarky Exile was about to be deleted by the Machines or castigated by the Merovingian. I was hoping for the latter, but considering that in-game!Merv deleted the leader of a palace uprising among his Lupine and Vampiric guards, I knew what that could mean... I was even considering cancelling my game membership and sending an annoyed message to the game devs, telling them why I quit.

Tonight, I jacked in with a certain amount of trepidation... The details would take way too long to describe, but suffice it to say, he's off the hook. I was rejoicing as I jacked out and logged onto Live365 to listen to Radio Zero-One...

About that same moment, the snarky fellow came into my forebrain, asking me "What kind of preposterous designs do they have levelled against my esteemed self now?"

Said I, "Well, they're letting your shadow-self off the hook."

At first he let out a deep-throated sigh of relief. Then, probably completely embarassed with himself for his lousy conduct the other night, he promptly face-palmed, or face-gloved -- rather -- and left my forebrain fuming.

I'm getting a little tired of being jerked around, and that's why... Interesting plot developments, but someone remind the devs that the Exiles need their peace. There's an obvious Zionite slant in the devs, and it's really starting to bug me. Anyone who knows me, knows that I completely empathize with the Exiles: the Matrix is their home, and if it is taken down, it will be catastrophic for all parties involved. If anything, the humans should be siding with the Exiles in trying to overthrow the Machines; the Matrix would be better off with the Exiles running it. But the problem is there's distrust on both sides: the humans distrust the Exiles since they're, y'know, OMG TEH EV0L AIs!!111111, and the Exiles distrust the humans, since they haven't always fared well at their hands. Our Flood could tell you some horror stories about getting kicked around by some less-than-open-hearted Redpills. But the Exiles, as I know them, are willing to take the necessary risk and try to get the humans to see their point of view.

Sometimes I think I understand my headspace-dwellers' world better than the canon creators do.

And in the spirit of self-parody, since Flood himself is practically a walking parody, I couldn't resist a short headspace-dweller filk:

What do we do with the drunken Exile?
What do we do with the drunken Exile?
What do we do with the drunken Exile?
Living in my headspace?

Throw 'im to the game devs, let them have 'im.
Throw 'im to the game devs, let them have 'im.
Throw 'im to the game devs, let them have 'im.
Get him outta my headspace!"

Kidding, just kidding....

I posted the first two over on the MxO board, but I wound up coming up with more, but I certainly couldn't put them *there*; in that context, they'd think my, ah, unique perspective on certain individuals was "god-moding". Keep an eye on this particular post, I may be editing it a lot.

Fear for my employer,
Now his second-in-command....
What's enough, devs?!

Red target on black frock coat,
Another on grey silk,
Let Exiles have their peace.

Firewalling info
From an info trafficker.
Exercise futility much?

Red King sleeps in peace
Unconcerned by shadows
That haunt my intellect

Snerking to keep back tears,
Gaudy night in my head.
My typing starts to suck.

His pain is partly mine
Emotional and otherwise.
I didn't sign up for this.

Red and grey yin-yanged
Two lives in my heart
Safe and secure there.

(Note: That one refers to a wierd dream/vision/involuntary visualization thing I had this morning when I was half-asleep/half-awake [Dreaming of... Exiles. Sort of Awake. -_o ]. I had the image of a kind of oval-shaped orb divided in two like a yin-yang; one half was red, the other half grey. In the red half, I sensed the Merv's essence, as it were, and in the grey half I sensed Flood's.)

[EDITED TO ADD: Flood obviously "wrote" this next one.]

Get this target off me:
I'm not your plot sacrfice.
Who writes this dull stuff?!

Well, if there was anything to convince me I probably made the right decision when I took the Pledge when I turned 21, besides the much more important reason that there's bad alcoholism on both sides of my thankfully estranged extended family, it would be having a hungover Exile in my headspace. This isn't fun. Neither was having him trying to front all last night when I was trying to IM people. Sorry about the occasional drunk typing last night, people! I barely managed to get him back under control, but thankfully, he passed out. Then the headspace crazies, including Adrien his brother, and Feronus the werewolf, decided to have some fun with him. They wanted to strip Flood naked and chain him to a street sign smack in the middle of Downtown in the Mega-City, but I told them that might make him an easy mark for whoever's trying to bump him off. Then they almost took [livejournal.com profile] he_dreams_awake's suggestion to "Cover him with mustard and tell him you have no idea what happened to him." I put in a comprimise: strip Flood and put some of his brother's cheap, off-the-rack clothes on him.

Needless to say, he didn't stir till noon, aside from waking up when I woke up at 9.30 and in a weakened voice begging me to "Please shut the blinds before [he] went blind". I replied, "I can't, there's a balsam fir with red and white Christmas lights on it in the way. And you can't be too bad off if you can still do word play." but he'd gone back under before I got all that out.

So... I've had to put up with a ghost of a headache and ghost nausea all day. If he ever does this again, I just might throw him to the mercy of the Tinkertoy devs and tell them "Have at it!" No, really, I'm managing to keep my sense of humor. Thank heavens that "Psychology Today" magazine ran a cover article on dealing with narcissists... one of the cardinal rules: If you keep a narcissist in the right perspective, they're actually very funny.
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (Cogito_Ergo_Snark)
WARNING: Headspace-dweller related rantage. May contain bad typing.

They're drawing a bead on Flood.

First the Merv, now his 2IC. What. The. Felch. Never heard of "don't shoot the messanger", devs?!

I only heard it from my friends in The Devil's Advocate (the Merv faction I run with), who've run more of the latest critical missions, that apparantly something wierd looks like it's gonna go down.

I don;t need to have two of my headspace dwellers in the gunsights, s'il vous plait. Stop putting a big red target on the back of the Merv's jacket, and don't put one on the Snarky Exile, the Monochrome Metrosexual, the Iceman... It shows up too easily: the Merv can take off his jacket and let the damn thing blend in with the red silk shirt he usually wears.

Sorry, I had to make a lame joke to make myself laugh.

Thus, Flood is in his own panic mode, and considering that this guy is a nervous drinker (ie. when he's nervous, he drinks more than his usual several mimosas spaced out in the course of an evening. A lot more.), he's proceeding to get himself pasted as fast as possible.
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (MxO_Sieges)
Despite the howling going on in my head from a certain quarter... Short shift at work today, so I was able to get back to working on a couple writing projects, most notably a piece which I hope to electronically record and have broadcasted on Radio Zero-One (( ::Points to the link in her Links list up above:: )). The Exiles want to have their plight described and broadcast to the world, and this is the perfect forum. The other, much less serious... yep, "This Shouldn't Be Happening". The ending is almost finished, I just have to write the middle of it...

Went poking around in Home Goods: the Merv started drooling when I spotted some $20 throw pillows. Apparantly, he's got this thing for throw pillows, has a pile of them at the head of his bed in the Chateau. I'm of a mind to buy a few, to give him something a little familiar for those moments when he pops into my head as I'm settling down to sleep; that's usually when he shows up (No, he is not trying to cop a feel from the inside; he just chooses this time to compare notes) for the longest stretch, for some wierd reason. and then there's the times when, well, I get a sense of what he and Ref are up to... ::Blushing::

Sieges had a happy evening running missions and clobbering goons. She's got her Dual SMGs and she's so not afraid to use 'em!
matrixrefugee: the word 'refugee' in electric green with a background of green matrix code (New Years)
It snowed in the night! We still had some of the snow from the storm before Christmas, but it was starting to get dingy-looking, so a fresh coat was in order. It's only a couple of inches, but it covered up all the ugly spots.

And since we weren't sure if there was going to be a Mass at Holy Trinity today, since the Archbishop seems to order a lot of churches in Boston to close for the on New Year's Day to oblige people to attend *his* Mass at the cathedral (Do not ask me why: it's a dumb rule and we found out about it the hard way), we ended up going to Mass at St. Francis of Assisi's in Dracut (Which wound up being perfect for me, since I wanted to light a candle before their icon of St. Francis, for the intention of the furry companion of a dear friend of mine... I thought of lighting a candle before the statue of St. Francis at St. Joe's in Lowell, but I won't be there till late in the week and I needed to expedite this).

Watched the New Year's Concert from Vienna's Musikverrein (I know I'm spelling that wrong, and my college German proff would be appalled...) on one of the local PBS stations. This has been a tradition for me since I was maybe 8 or 9 (I was and still am a classical music geek, though my tastes have really broadened since then), and it wouldn't be New Years without it. My mom got me into it because often the concerts feature short ballet sequences performed by members of the Vienna Staatsoper Ballet.

Last night we watched "A Knight's Tale", which my buddy Mark had reccommended to me. Okay, it's a little hoky (that rock soundtrack is a little out-of-place, but if you can suspend your disbelief, it falls into place, like the deliberate anachronisms in T.H. White's The Once and Future King), but surprisingly, it captures medieval life fairly well: a lot of our impressions of what medieval life was like come to us from those wretched Victorians and their prim-and-proper sensibilities. You think of the knight defending the fair maiden... well, the fair maiden would probably be able to get a stab or two into her attacker and slow him down, with the little dagger she kept in her belt. The female blacksmith isn't so far-fetched: there were seperate guilds, in the 1200's and 1300's, for men and women of each trade, in many parts of Europe. Who knows? That might have included blacksmithing.

And I successfully opened a bottle of (alcohol-removed) champagne just before midnight last night. Those things are not easy to open without the cork jetting out, but I managed somehow. The Houseparty Had Its Fun... )
